The following is a suggestion timeline. Although there is no formulaic pattern to get through college, the timeline may help you put yourself in perspective and evaluate where you stand and where you think you should stand. See your advisor in Park 283 if you have concerns, remembering that this is only a template.

SOPHOMORE YEAR
Complete required Psychology Department courses, and apply to the department.

JUNIOR YEAR
Begin to identify your career interests and preferences. Analyze your skills and values as they relate to potential career choices. Talk with your advisor, Professors, friends, family, and anyone else about your post-graduation plans. Gather information about your occupational options.

You may want to visit Career Services and investigate their resources.

Work with your faculty advisor to have a major, minor, and/or elective courses in areas that are relevant to your interests. Make tentative plans about when you will take these courses.

Investigate opportunities for summer jobs or volunteer work that will give you job-relevant experience.

SUMMER BETWEEN JUNIOR AND SENIOR YEAR
Work on clarifying, further, your career interests and preferences. Look into yourself and talk with people.

Continue to gather information and begin to make preliminary decisions about career options.

SENIOR YEAR
September:
Review/revise/reaffirm your appraisal of your skills, needs, interests, and values as these relate to your career choices.

Continue to gather information about potential career areas. Request information from various Graduate Schools if you plan on attending, or spend time on the internet searching their pages.

Consider doing volunteer work that will allow you to develop job-relevant skills.

Consider enrolling in an Independent Study or gather Research Field Experience.

Develop a working résumé, set up a Credential File, and begin thinking about who you will ask for recommendation letter.

October/November:
Request letters of recommendation from appropriate contacts (faculty, past employers, Field Experience supervisor, etc.). Have them sent to Career Services to your Credential File.

December:
Continue to develop job or post-graduation leads.

Send out cover letters and résumés. Follow up within 10 days with a phone call. Attempt to schedule job interviews during Winter break for off-campus contacts.

Go to interviews as appropriate. Write thank-you notes and send within one week after visit.

January-June:
Consider doing volunteer or field experience work that will allow you to develop job-relevant skills if you have not already done so.

Continue your job searching. Remember that assertiveness and perseverance will pay off.
