Minutes: 9/16/99
Minutes by Joshua Hilliard, LGBA Secretary
A short summary of what went down at today's meeting. Try and read these
because they really do have alot of important info for people who couldn't
make it to the meetings or just forgot or something... There is ALOT OF
IMPORTANT INFORMATION SO PLEASE READ IT ALL!!!
--Meetings will now ALWAYS be held on Thursdays at 12:30 in the office!
PLEASE come, the more active members we have the bigger difference we can
make...
--First we announced (or reannounced...) the new officers, Liz Holland,
President and Joshua Hilliard, Secretary. The office of Vice President is
still vacant due to some election confusion and complication. The E-Board
will appoint a VP and at the next meeting voting members will vote to
accept or decline this appointment.
--There will be a GRASP on 9/23 at 7:30PM at Atchison (sp?) on South
Campus. We still need volunteers for this event. Contact Olive at
oed@acsu.buffalo.edu if interested.
--The AIDS walk will take place on 9/26. The LGBA group will meet outside
the Student Union on North Campus at 9:00AM. At the meeting we discussed
a goal of each walker raising $100 in sponsors by 9/26. For those who are
not already signed up, stop in the office tmw and pick up a packet or
contact Liz at ech@acsu.buffalo.edu
--LGBA is attempting to organize a trip to see Melissa Ethridge(sp?)
perform at Shea's on 10/22. If 20 people or more go we can get a group
rate, so each ticket would be only $25. Again, contact Liz or leave your
name on the signup sheet in the office if interested.
--A group of students is trying to organize a UB Progressive group to deal
with Greiner and various student gripes. Contact schade@acsu... for more
info.
--At the meeting we discussed a method of attack on our response to the
David DelBello article about Gay issues in Wend.'s issue of the Spectrum.
There will be a meeting to organize an effective response. The meeting's
date has not been set yet. Check into the office and the list serv if you
are interested in participating.
--We also discussed some general office rules:
- - Eating in the office may have to be restricted if trash is not
thrown away and if food continues to be thrown into the recycle
can.
- - Please limit phone calls to 5 minutes (just so we don't tie up
the phone too much)
--The NY State assembly is looking for interns...ask Liz for more about
this one...
--The E-Board has decided that for some Orginizations positiions we will
ask for applications and consider them in order to better appoint more
qualified members to jobs they are better prepared to serve. We also
thought that this way the people who already are involved in the positions
(who will be most likely simply re-appointed anyway) will be able to train
those who are interested. The positions that must be applied for are:
-COSG group leaders
-GRASP coordinator
-Office Manager
-Special Projects Coordinator
-Diversity advocates for the council for multicultural affairs.
The applications will be short and painless (we promise) and they will be
by Monday at the latest. (But check tmw, we may have them done...)
--IREWG (I'm not sure what it stands for, something with Woman's Rights
and Gender something. Have fun making up what it could be...) is having a
film festival soon and LGBA is considering sponsoring (read:paying for) a
film for the festival. We are open to suggestions and will vote on it at a
meeting in the future.
--A constitution revision commitee will begin to meet soon. All those
interested in participating contact Liz at (one more time...) ech@acsu...
--We discussed the Confrence Meeting that occured last Friday. Basically
things are going well. Ani backed out :( BUT it looks like we should be
able to get Candice Ginrich, Leslie Newman, and Dan Savage for around
$3000 which is very good. Check the office and list serv for the next
confrence committee meeting dates.
--Coming Out Day will be celebrated Oct. 13 this year. We are planning
are usual Drag Show, cosponsored by UUAB. Alison Piptone is also likely to
play. We are also considering various speeches and presentations. If you
have any ideas or would like to get involved talk to Liz, Michele, or
speak up at the next meeting.
--Finally, we voted to purchase a NEW couch (rust colored, for all you
fashion concious bitches) for the office from the Rada family for $30.00.
Thanks for bering with this...I know it's a little long...
BYE!
