Meeting Minutes

Minutes: 10/14/99

Minutes by Michele Tucker, LGBA Secretary

ahhh...just in the nick of time....this is what all you crazy queers have been waiting for...the anticipated 10/14 meeting minutes!

(michele waits patiently for the crazed screaming and excitement to die down).

i would like to thank christian, first of all, for taking minutes for the first half of the meeting. i'm sorry i was late--you rock. it won't happen again.

so, yo yo yo here we go.....firstly, there is a new slew of positions, elected and appointed, e-board and not, as you guys know... here it is, in its' entirety...

Liz Holland- president, Webmaster, Conference Coordinator
Christian DiCanio- vice-president, GRASP Coordinator
Lisa Milano- Treasurer, Visual Identity Committee(?) Coordinator
Michele Tucker- Secretary, COSG Faciliator, GRASP Facilitator
Ilana Horowitz- Special Projects Coordinator
John Hale- Office Manager

Melissa Rada- Librarian
Jill Duffy- GRASP Facilitator
Peter Bruschi- COSG Facilitator

the first six are e-board, the second half are not....however, it should be known that anyone is welcome to attend e-board meetings if they have any questions or concerns about the organization they don't want to bring up in a general meeting.....e-board meetings are Mondays @ 2:30, however they may be occasionally subject to change depending on necessity and availability.....or something. : )

Lisa has expressed interest in organizing a Visual Identity Committee, which will be, among other things, in charge of getting new Safe Space stickers and possible LGBA t-shirts. If anyone is interested in designing a logo for these shirts, submit your designs to Lisa by the end of the semester.

Lisa has gotten the LGBA 50/50 Raffle Tickets.....please consider taking at least 10 to sell to friends, family and just plain strangers... (you may also want to consider using it to get a conversation going with that hot piece of ass in your World Civ lecture.....just a thought : ) see Lisa to get the tickets and the specifics of the raffle...

hmm...I'm looking at Christian's notes taken here on the Gay and Lesbian Coalition meeting that I believe Liz may have attended.....I reprint them here verbatim:

"Gay and Lesbian Coalition: don't bother
-not a good organization
-stupid

addition by Liz: it was discussed that the coalition focused too much on themselves and whtehr or not they were elitist, which in and of itself, was seemingly very elitist. All attending with exception of myself, Lisa, and Ilana, were white male.

i just love LGBA general meetings. : )

on a personal note, I would like to thank everyone who participated in the Amateur Drag Show, both performers, crew and attendees. It was a great success and we got a bigger turnout than last year. The winners were as follows...

2nd runner up: Troy Poremba--"Dairy Queen"
Ist runner up: Olive Demetrius--"Busta"

and the 1st Place prize went to.......[drum roll]

THE "BACKDOOR BOYS"! (Erin O'Boyle, Rachelle Shanley, Kathryn Sahler, Tina Cruz and Lisa Goodberry)

they performed the next day at Coming Out Day to a great reception.

-October 21st, the Ant-Rape Task Force is sponsoring their annual "Take Back The Night" event to protest sexual violence. It's a great event...I speak from attending it last year and it was a moving experience. Please consider attending it; for more information, see Liz, who I believe has the details.

--on the 23rd, LGBA will have a table set up at "Discover UB". The tabling will be from 10-2 am, I believe on a Saturday, and one of the things we'll be advertising is the Queer Zoo, LGBA's safe space housing on campus. So far, Lisa, Christian, Kathryn, Liz and myself will be there....anyone else interested see Liz.

--"Mansex 101/Pearls, Pearls, Pearls" --Jason Rein and Mary Alice Boyd from Aids Community Services are in the planning stages for their series of safer sex/related topics workshops next semester. They will be talking with LGBA members about topics they'd like to see discussed. This is planned for November 11th, a Thursday, at 7pm (in COSG's time slot). It will be held in 210 student union. If interested see Liz for details.

Plans to attend the Millenium March on Washington for LGBT rights have begun, and the LGBA is going as a group. We will be taking the SA vans on that weekend, April 28-30, 2000. They can hold about 30 people between both, and I think at last count there were at least 15 spots left. Please speak to Liz for more information, and let her know if you plan to attend ASAP.

-in our constant quest to further expand LGBA's visibility and outreach, we are looking for ideas on how to involve ourselves in community, non-gay events and services. if anyone has any ideas, please bring them to either the next general meeting [thursday @ 12:30] the e-board, or just post them to the listserv.

Young and Out, Buffalo's gay youth discussion group, meets Wednesdays @ 3:30 pm in the lobby of the Angelika Theater. The coordinators of the group have expressed interest in having LGBA members attend.

Buff State's newly rebirthed LGBA is still in its' infancy, and the president would like to have LGBA members attend their general meetings to help them better organize themselves and coordinate events. If anyone is interested in attending, please see Liz for details.

Anthony Fleming would like to involve some LGBA members in career counseling. I'm not exactly clear on what this would entail, but if you are at all interested his e-mail is afleming@acsu.buffalo.edu. It sounds like a great opportunity, especially for young, queer people such as ourselves...... : )

and, lastly, the proposal that LGBA take on a faculty advisor has come up. If anyone can think of any out professors that you think would benefit our organization, please post your ideas either to the listserv, bring to the e-board, or the general meetings.

we-ell......i guess that's it...until next week, this has been your friendly secretary michele, bringing you ALL LGBA NEWS, ALL THE TIME. thanks for scrolling down. :)
