Sport Information Gymnastics?
What? I’m
sure you’ve watched the Olympics at some point in your life. Gymnasts are those cool athletes that do
all sorts of flips and twists and fly around on bars and rings. We’re the ones that do flips at parties,
can do handstands for minutes at a time, and basically just be awesome at
what we do. For those of you who love
gymnastics, but don’t understand it…read on! Guys and
Girls can do it! Our
team is co-ed, however the sport of gymnastics has
some differences for each gender. For
example, girls compete 4 events; Vault, Bars, Beam, Floor. Guys compete 6
events; Floor, Pommel Horse, Rings, Vault, Parallel Bars and High bar. Girls are allowed music for floor routines to
emphasize artistry, while guys are denied that option to concentrate on
tumbling and strength moves. The
tricks that both genders do require an immense amount of strength,
flexibility, balance, endurance and kinesthetic awareness. Competitions: At
competitions, each gymnast is given a warm-up period. Afterwards, the gymnast presents
him/herself to the judge and executes a routine on the given apparatus
according to certain requirements and regulations. The judge then scores the routine against a
rubric. That score is then compared to
the other gymnasts doing routines on that event, and awards are given to the
best. At some meets, there are also
team awards. Team scores are figured
by adding the top 3 to 5 scores (depending on the competition) together and
coming up with a team total. That
total is then compared to other teams to decide the winners. Women
compete using Level 9 Rules with D and E bonus. Men compete using a Modified
fig code. (I’ll find links to those soon).
Those gymnasts not quite at that level should not feel
discouraged. Gymnasts from all levels
compete, and do quite well! Especially
since we are in a college club division, we emphasize the fun side of
competition. Nobody should feel
intimidated or scared to compete. More questions
