The team met and left on Friday afternoon, about 5. As they piled into their cars they closed their doors on a snowy Buffalo April, eager to move south to warmer climes. Arriving in Pennsylvania around 10 they found that it wasn't a whole lot warmer, but there wasn't any snow around... yet.

True to form, Dave woke the team up by rectal crack of dawn. The clocks said 6:30, but it felt earlier than that. A long drive to the fields later they arrived at the tournament site, just as the host team was starting to set up the fields... in the snow....

By 8:30 the team was warming up in a field covered by about two inches of snow. Hadi maked the field with a "UB" at midfield, while Bad Andy et al sculpted a Buffalo from the snow shoveled away for our sideline area.
Saturday
Game 1: Gettysburg
Hadi and Phil connected to score three of the first four points for UB while the Springfield line floundered to find a rhythm against Pan Fried Funk. The two teams held close through the beginning of the game. Emerging from a 4-5 deficit the Shelbyville line pressed on and took halftime, then scored the first point after half. UB pressed on from there, finally pushing Gettysburg back and sealing the game at 13-9. The game was finished with a quick defensive stuff near the goal line by Dixie, who immediately picked up the disc and fed it to Graham for the score. Shelbyville emerged as the dominant line, scoring 9 of UB's points in this game.
Result: UB 13 - Gettysburg 9
Game 2: Vassar
Any rhythm or momentum UB had built up was quickly squelched in the fist half against Vassar. The only point of the half came on a less-than-well-planned huck from P. Rag that was cleaned up by Cupcake for the score. The second half came with a small rally where UB outscored Vassar 7-6 of their points. Shelbyville showed that their success in the first game wasn't entirely rock solid, only scoring 2 points to Springfield's 5. The final point of the game came from the rally effort power line called out in hopes of putting on the big stop needed to slow Vassar.

The single point the power line scored wasn't enough and UB folded with only 8 points. UB was beat by a team that clealy wanted this game more, always willing to change their path to go-to and making quick, sharp cuts.
Result: Vassar 13 - UB 8
Bye
The sun had come out and the snow had melted by this time. Eager to relax and move beyond their loss, many players took to the nearby trees and fields for disc golf. James(?) finished with the low score while Gonzo provde to be a trooper, hanging in their with lefty tosses. Others napped. Good times.
Game 3: Drexel
There aren't a whole lot of different ways to say Green Eggs and Ham got beat again. This is one of them. UB only came up with six points, half were thrown by The Admiral. This was an incredibly frustrating loss that left a lot of people angry and very frustrated. It became clear that UB is capable of winning these games, but their game will need to mature a lot: hotter, more aggressive defensive and smarter, cleaner offense will be needed if Buffalo is going to win as many games as they're capable of.
Result: Drexel 13 - UB 6
Game 4: Shippensburg
Any warming that happened during the afternoon was quickly undone as the setting sun mixed with some dark clouds to hurrry the teams along. Certain points during the game were hampered by snow so thick it was difficult to see to the other end of the field. This game was a test to see if UB could put their frustration with the past game behind them, while holding onto the competitive edge they had picked up.

Buffalo rose to the occasion and held Shippensburg in check throughout the game. While never running away with the game, UB did control the tempo and led through most of the contest. Especially hot plays included a no-look over-the-shoulder catch by Alon at the goalline that was flipped in for the goal and two consecutive d-blocks by PR in the endzone, thwarting a Shippensburg scoring drive.
Result: UB 13 - Shippensburg 8
Saturday Night:
Team dinner at Friendly's and ealy bed times. It turns out that even an army of subs can't stop an ultimate player from being really tired on Saturday night.
Sunday:
Wow, it got really really cold on Sunday. High in the 40's with rain, sleet, and wind.
Drexel Rematch
UB was decidedly fired up this time. Tired of losing, and being accused of soft play they came out playing harder and much crisper. Half-time came with UB down 7-5, still very close. After half Drexel continued to score until Captain Rag looked at the score, now 10-6, and realized something needed to be done.

Sending in the toughest line of 7 they could muster, Buffalo dug in their heels and prepared to fight hard until the end. Clearly UB was not in the mood to give up right away. On the ensuing pull the team stormed downfield when Cupcake noticed that Dan had provided them with a generous, floating pull into the endzone. Seeing the game in front of him he ran past his man and attacked the first throw, lunging and batting away the disc just before it reached its target. The sidelines of Buffalo, Vassar, Susquehanna, and even Drexel exploded at such a hot play. Hadi and Dixie quickly connected to seal up the point and UB was on the attack again.

This time it took a defensive stop before the offense could strike at Drexel. The defense came and Dan located Cupcake near the endzone, hitting him with a hammer that Chris scooped at full extension, just before it hit the ground. Cupcake found Yasu and sealed another pretty point. Clearly UB, and Cupcake in particular, was in no mood to let this game go uncontested.

Struggling on a diminished line of defensive warriors UB fought up to tie the game at ten. This second half rally was due in a huge way to the awesome defense that Hadi, Unk, and Cupcake brought to the field. Eating up play after play they showed that UB was ready to attack. Unable to hold them back, UB slipped and Drexel took the las three points to win the game. Both teams and the other players watching agreed that this game was some of the hottest ultimate they've seen in a long time: hard-fought and worked point after point until the end.
Result: Dexel 13 - UB 10
Final Thoughts
That's the last tournament before sectionals, where we've decided we want to finish strong enough to earn a bid to regionals. That means winning a lot more games and beating tougher teams than Drexel. That's within the ability of our players, but our team can only do it if every person is prepared to take the things you think are out of reach and play every point like it's a rally point.

When you bring 22 people to sectionals (we are) you should play each and every shift like it's your last, churning hard for every single point and contesting each throw. Every time the disc leaves their hand it's a chance for you to take it!

We're almost there....
