Name:
Doug Johnston Year: 2nd Year Law Student
Major: Law
Riding/Racing History: I’ve spent the past 14 years racing on my
feet, but have never raced on wheels. I was a competitive
middle-distance runner through high school and undergrad, specializing
in the 800m and the Mile. In high school I won numerous state medals in
New York and was ranked in the top 10 among U.S. high school athletes in
the 1000m dash, in addition I achieved top 5 Canadian national rankings
on both the Junior and Senior level. I’ve medaled in every event I’ve
competed in at the Empire State Games; three golds, two silvers. I was
co-captain of the University at Buffalo cross country team, a school
record holder, and was one of the top-ranked middle distance runners in
the Mid-American Conference and New York State. For the 2004-2005 and
2005-2006 school years, I was the Assistant Cross Country/Track and
Field Coach at the University at Buffalo. Having never raced on a bike,
all of the above is meaningless.
Why do you race, or why have you chosen to join UB Cycling Team:
I’ve never raced to be better than anyone but myself. I race to see
what I am capable of and to get the enjoyment of knowing you’ve pushed
yourself beyond what you’ve done before.
I joined UB Cycling Team after picking up a bike this past summer. I’d
become frustrated with injuries resulting from my years of running.
Every time I would get my training to a point I was happy with, an
injury would flare up and set me back. After numerous attempts, it
looked as if I would never be able to enjoy a hard workout, let alone
entertain the thought of racing. My bike has proven those thoughts
wrong. After getting in some solid rides this past summer, I thought
that joining a club and seeing about racing would satisfy my dormant
competitive drive.
Plans in the club:
I’d like to start racing, learn as much as I can from others, and
help out in any way I can.
What are your goals for this season:
- To train consistently
- To find a balance between achieving my goals in law school, being fit
and having a good time while I do both of those.
- To learn as much as I can
- To race and see how far I can push myself
