If you read ONE THING this Semester READ THIS !!!!!
Welcome to the first issue of Commuter Briefs! This newsletter comes
to you from the Commuter Affairs Council. Its purpose is to let you, the
commuter freshmen, know more about UB. It will provide information about
events, clubs to join, and improvements made to how UB serves its commuter
population. There will be more issues during the spring semester. (They
will be written and designed by the Commuter Affairs Council, if you would
like to join please e-mail me- Leaf Stutzman at las1@acsu.buffalo.edu) |
The Commuter Affairs Council has been a very powerful organization
in the past. However, it had not been active in recent years. It was re-formed
this fall and has been very active. The council has been working with Student
Life to have the Lounge renovated. The Commuter Lounge is located in 240
Student Union. If the renovations are done, it will be completely updated
and staffed to serve as an information and meeting point for commuters.
It will also be expanded connect to the pool room and have more for students
to do. This may happen during the spring semester. The Council also participated
in Spirit Week and Homecoming Carnival and did an excellent job.
The Council meets once a month and the date and time is advertised in
the Spectrum (backpage) and flyers are posted on campus. It serves to attend
to concerns of commuters and to provide activities.
Currently, the Council is planning discounted tickets for the Buffalo
Blizzards Soccer games to be offered in February and March. |
Most of you have probably heard of the Undergraduate Student Association.
It is located on the third floor of the Student Union. Within SA there are
six councils, five of which are made up of clubs and the other is the Commuter
Affairs Council, which is a single organization. Also within SA are the
legislative bodies, the Senate and the Assembly, and the executive officers,
President, VP, and Treasurer.
Since there are about 135 clubs total, there is probably one that everyone
is interested in. The types of clubs are academic, international, people
of color, sports, and service, hobby, and special interest.
SA also has events. In the fall semester there was Fall fest, Linda Yalem
Run, Spirit Week, Homecoming Carnival, Midnight Mania, as well as the Distinguished
Speaker Series that included General Colin Powell and Elie Wisel.
In the Spring:
Feb. 4 National Girls and Women in Sports Day Breakfast
Mar. 24 Cokie Roberts (Distinguished Speaker-get tickets in SA)
Apr. 22 Tommy Lasorda (Distinguished Speaker)
Apr. 23 International Fiesta
Apr. 24 Oozfest
May 1 Springfest (Concert free with student ID) |
|
All undergraduate day students are members of SA. If you would like to
join Assembly petitions will be available January 19 and must be submitted
by February 15. The general elections for the executive positions are in
March and clubs elections are about that time as well.
Within SA there are also staff jobs that include directors and office
positions, those are usually filled at the end of the spring semester.

FRESHMAN COMMITTEE
The Freshman Committee began at the start of the fall semester. The Student
Association was glad to welcome this group. The committee is very energetic
and has lots of great ideas. They have been under the guidance of SA President,
Naniette Coleman, and decided that the topics that interest them most are
commuter affairs and orientation. They meet once a month as a whole and
weekly in their interest group.
The Orientation Group has come up with suggestions on how to improve
orientation. They did this by surveying students and by working with SA
directors. They are continuing the look for ways of making the orientation
a better process.
The Commuter Affairs group meets with the Coordinator of Commuter Affairs,
Leaf Stutzman. They are working on the controversial parking problem, designing
a decal for commuters to put on their cars, and getting discounts for commuters.
To address the parking situation they conducted a survey and are looking
into the alternatives.
The Freshman committee will continue through the spring semester and
the students on it plan to create a similar committee next year for sophomores.
There will also be a Freshman committee for 1999-2000.
COMMUTER AWARENESS WEEK
Commuter Awareness Week takes place in March and there will be more details
in the next edition. The activities are being planned by Commuter Affairs
and Student Life. There will be something in the Student Union lobby for
commuters similar to what is done the first week of every semester. During
the first week of each semester there is free coffee and food in the morning,
it is called the Commuter Coffee Break and it provided by Student Life.
GETTING TO KNOW UB
UB has a lot to offer to all students. However, since the University
is so large and most information is provided on campus through the Residents
Halls, it can often take a commuter longer to get to know everything at
their school and about the events and activities for students.
We have included calendars and information about UB to make it easier
for commuters to find out about things to do on-campus besides attend classes.
Since we all pay for more than just attending classes, it makes sense to
take advantage of the other activities. |
