Welcome to the Watson research group’s homepage! Our research in UB’s Department of Chemistry involves the synthesis, characterization, and surface functionalization of inorganic nanomaterials. We utilize surface chemistry and template-directed synthesis to control the composition, shape, and interconnectivity of nanostructured materials. We focus on developing new methods for materials assembly and designing materials with novel photochemical and electron transfer reactivity. Such materials may have applications in solar-to-electrical energy conversion, photocatalysis, sensing and detection, and information storage.

Students working in our research group develop skills in the following areas:

  • Synthetic materials chemistry

  • Surface chemistry
  • Materials characterization techniques
  • Vibratonal spectroscopy
  • Time-resolved spectroscopy
  • Photochemistry
  • Electrochemistry
