About the Department

Since its establishment in 1927, the School of Management has built an impressive reputation as one of the best schools of business in the world. The comprehensive range of its academic portfolio, the expertise of its faculty, and the worldwide success of its graduates are the primary reasons for the school’s acclaim.

Today the academic mission of the School of Management literally spans the globe, and students at the school hail from all over the world. In any given class, a visitor to the school may find students from Tonawanda or New York City sitting side-by-side students from Asia or Germany, as they listen to a professor who recently returned from teaching top executives in Singapore.

In an increasingly global business environment, the diversity of the school’s programs, and its international reputation, help ensure that the School of Management degree is a credential that opens doors for students at any business anywhere in the world.

The expertise of the school’s faculty is most valuable to students pursuing an education at the graduate level. For information about the M.B.A. program, see http://www.mgt.buffalo.edu/mba/. For information about the Ph.D. program, see http://www.mgt.buffalo.edu/phd/.

At the undergraduate level, approximately 2,200 students enroll annually in either the nationally regarded business administration or accounting programs. Many of these students benefit from an internship program that is considered to be one of the best and largest in the country.

In aulition to credit-bearing management curricula, the school administers a host of continuing-education management programs through its Center for Executive Development. Approximately 5,000 business people enroll annually at the center for programs that range from Entrepreneurial Leadership to Management Strategy to Computer Training to Emotional Intelligence to Advanced Tax Practices.

About Our Degrees

The undergraduate program in the School of Management is designed to prepare students for managerial roles in both the private and not-for-profit sectors. The curriculum emphasizes both a broad exposure to mathematics and the social sciences and a general education in management studies. The program of study in management gives particular attention to understanding the role of the business firm in society; the management functions of planning and control; the behavior of organizations; the tools of modern management, including accounting, economics and statistics; and the ways in which managers perform such functions as production, marketing, finance and industrial relations.

The school’s undergraduate program is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and leads to the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree.

  3. Junior standing.

Transfer Policy

Students may apply for transfer from two-year and four-year colleges and enter the School of Management business administration track as provisional majors; they are subject to the academic review and requirements previously stated. Transfer students who have completed a minimum of 50 credit hours and the seven management foundation courses (or approved equivalents) with a minimum GPA of 2.5 are admitted to the upper division of the School of Management.

The following courses are prerequisites to upper-level courses in the major and must be completed with a minimum GPA of 2.5: one semester each of psychology, computer science, and statistical science; and two semesters each of accounting, economics, and calculus (or one semester of an equivalent MTH 131 course). The normal requirements for a transfer student to petition for a course equivalency for MGA 201- MGA 202 Introduction to Accounting I-II is the successful completion of two semesters of accounting courses, including financial and managerial accounting. Upper-level management-related courses should be deferred until the junior or senior year at the university.
