Transfer students need to complete the admission process with The University at Buffalo. Financial aid awards are only offered to students who have been admitted. NOTE: If you omitted your social security number (SSN) from your Admissions Application, please be aware this will delay the processing of your financial aid. In order for our office to identify you as an applicant we must match your financial aid record to your admissions record, which required your SSN be added to your record. Please submit the Social Security Number Change Form (PDF) with required documentation to our office.

There are several steps to applying for financial aid. Please review the Apply for Financial Aid process to get started. Some important deadlines to remember are March 1 for the FAFSA; UB Deposits by May 1 (or within 10 days of acceptance to UB) and correct any errors or issues identified on your account as soon as you can.

If you are a transfer student, please be sure that you have updated the FAFSA to reflect your transfer to UB (federal school code of 002837). After you update the FAFSA, you will need to update the New York TAP data (UB’s TAP code is 1010).

You may receive an email requesting additional information from the Office of Financial Aid in order to determine your financial aid eligibility. If you receive this email, please respond so that we can verify the financial aid that you are eligible to receive. Checking your "To Do List" in the HUB Student Center will give you details on any missing information or actions you need to take.

A transfer student to UB must accept their admissions offer and make their tuition deposit in order to create their account at UB. You will not be able to complete the financial aid process until you make this initial deposit.

When you receive your award letter or email infroming you your financial aid award is available to view online, there will be decisions that you have to make to finalize your aid package. Required forms are available online.

• Transfer students must make a deposit to UB to finalize any scholarships or grant awards.
• You have the option to accept all or some of any loans offered to you. Please visit Understanding Your Award letter for more information about this process.
• If you believe that your package did not consider all your financial information, you may submit an appeal.
• If your status has changed since you filed the FAFSA, such as becoming a full-time student when you originally planned to be part-time, or you opted for campus housing, you should file an update with the Financial Aid Office. These changes may affect the amount of aid for which you are eligible.

NOTE: If you still have a gap in your financial aid, your parents may borrow a Federal Parent (PLUS) Loan or you may consider an Alternative/Private loan to help pay your education expenses.

You can view, accept and decline your financial aid awards through the HUB Student Center via MyUB, once you make your admission deposit.

NOTE: All campus-based Federal financial aid funds awarded by May 1 must be accepted by May 15. All awards made after May 1 must be accepted within two (2) weeks of the award date.

Federal Subsidized/Unsubsidized Stafford Loan Recipients

Federal student aid regulations require Federal Direct Loan borrowers to undergo Loan Entrance Counseling. This serves as a means to educate you on the rights and responsibilities associated with receiving funds that must be repaid. Please visit the Federal Direct Loan page for detailed instructions for making sure UB is listed as your school.

Electronic Master Promissory Note (e-MPN)

A Direct Stafford Subsidized or Unsubsidized Loan requires an e-MPN, which is an agreement to pay back any Direct Stafford Subsidized or Unsubsidized Loans.

Perkins Loan Recipients

If you are offered a Perkins Loan on your financial aid award letter and accept this loan on the HUB, you will receive instructions from the Office of Financial Aid on when to complete the required entrance counseling session and e-MPN.

Federal Work Study Recipients

The Federal Work-Study program provides employment opportunities in various offices on campus and in community service agencies to students who demonstrate financial need.

Please review Applying for Aid and update your FAFSA file each January. Students receiving TAP are required to have an Accepted Major (Approved Major) on file after completing 60 credit hours.

As part of the financial aid renewal process, your academic record will be examined to confirm that you are making satisfactory academic progress and that you have not withdrawn from UB.

Notify the Office of Financial Aid to update or change your financial aid status, including enrollment, degree program, housing, or additional funding not reported by submitting the Financial Aid Status Change form. Required forms are available online.
