is Phi Eta Sigma?
Phi Eta Sigma is a National Honors Society founded in 1923
at the University of Illinois. Phi Eta Sigma is the oldest
and largest honor society with over 353 Chapters throughout
the nation for outstanding first-year college students who
have managed to achieve an overall 3.5 - 4.0 GPA at the
top twenty percent of their class. Phi Eta Sigma exists
to promote academic excellence, community involvement, and
social networking to help its members better improve their
college experience and onward. Since its founding, Phi Eta
Sigma has inducted over 900,000 members and continues to
grow each year, offering students an opportunity of a lifetime
to better themselves and stand above and beyond ordinary.
As a group, Phi Eta Sigma stands by its motto, "Knowledge
is Power!"
What
are the requirements to become part of Phi Eta Sigma?
All first-year students who have achieved a 3.5 - 4.0 GPA
at the end of their first year are invited to become a part
of our National Honors Society in recognition of their academic
excellence. All majors are welcomed!
Must
I maintain my average?
No, a lifetime membership is conferred once inducted as
a member of Phi Eta Sigma. As Phi Eta Sigma, we strive to
promote academic excellence throughout your college years
and offer members a chance to establish a lifetime network
with other members.
What
is included in the membership fee?
First and foremost, Phi Eta Sigma offers all their engaging
members a college experience like no other through social,
academic, and philanthropic events. Also, Phi Eta Sigma
offers its members a chance to become part of a diverse
organization in all different majors. To help promote Phi
Eta Sigma member's academic achievements, we offer many
scholarships and awards to both outstanding undergraduate
and graduate Phi Eta Sigma members. A portion of the membership
fee goes towards the Founders Fund, which provides fifty
or more national graduate or undergraduate endowed scholarships
of up to $7,500 each and fifty or more national undergraduate
awards of $1,000. One $10,000 Scholar-Leader-of-the-Year
scholarship is also awarded annually.
Who
is eligible for these scholarships?
Cash scholarships of up to $7,500 and awards of $1,000 are
provided to members of Phi Eta Sigma selected by the national
scholarship committee. One $10,000 Scholar-Leader-of-the-Year
scholarship is also awarded annually. Members applying for
the undergraduate scholarships and awards, as well as the
Scholar-Leader of the Year Award, must be nominated by their
chapters. Any Phi Eta Sigma member may apply for the graduate
scholarships.
Why
should I join Phi Eta Sigma?
Phi Eta Sigma membership is an outward recognition of personal
accomplishment and serves as an incentive for continued
high scholarship. It provides you the opportunity to meet
scholars from all academic disciplines on your campus and
to join them in promoting academic excellence and campus
and community service. Also, you may apply for scholarships
provided by national and by some local chapters. Membership
in Phi Eta Sigma identifies you to employers and professionals
and graduate schools as a person of superior academic ability
and a commitment to campus and community service.
