What is The Guild? The Guild is an organization setup solely to help the students of the Theatre and Dance department during their time at UB. Yes, this includes the acting, dance, design and dance parts of the department. Without any one of them the department wouldn't be what it is now; therefore we need for the voices of all of the students from every part to be heard. Everyone who is a student of the department is automatically a member of The Guild. People then have the option of whether or not to do anything with it. There is no punishment for not showing up, but if you don't like what's going on you know where to go to complain. We meet every Thursday from 5-6 in room 190 Alumni Arena and discuss things we would like to see happen within the department and grievances about what we don’t like. Every month the faculty liaisons attend a staff meeting and propose our suggestions. The Guild is completely student run. Everyone has an equal say. There are coordinators that help oversee and orchestrate things, but they are students too. Since this is student run, no one at the meetings have to worry about actually saying, for instance, that they completely hate how a teacher does part of a class. You can come to a Guild meeting, voice what you want and they can tell the faculty. We are also responsible for all of the student productions. If you want to do one, you need to go through The Guild. Shortly, there will be a page dedicated to explaining how that works, but in the meantime go to a meeting and ask how. Additionally, we're the people largely responsible for the way the Student Lounge is. Would you prefer a lounge with the same cozy feel of the rest of the CFA or one where you can paint on the bricks? Also, we're the people the faculty goes to when they have questions as to what kinds of workshops people would be interested in (i.e. Stage Makeup, Stage Combat, Dialects, etc.) This being said, you really should show up to a meeting. We work for you and like it or not, you're one of us. |
