Article I – Name
Informatics Graduate Student Association
Article II. Objectives
The objectives of the Informatics Graduate Student Association are to promote and represent graduate student interests within the School of Informatics.
- To identify and promote the academic, intellectual and career concerns of the membership.
- To provide social and recreational activities for the membership.
- To undertake projects and activities to benefit the members.
- To undertake such other activities as the members may decide from time to time.
Article III – Membership
- The club accepts all graduate students from the School of Informatics who are interested in socio-technical aspects of Informatics and related sciences.
- Voting membership – at least 51% of the voting membership must be informatics graduate students. The officer positions must be held by the currently enrolled graduate students (part time or full time) in the MA in Informatics Program.
- No one is obligated to perform any duties in order to maintain the membership.
Article IV – Officers
The officers and the duties of the Executive Board are as follows:
President
- Announces the times and Places of the meetings.
- Presides over meetings and prepare meeting agendas.
- Serves as a primary liaison between IGSA and the School of Informatics faculty.
- Ensures that all responsibilities have been delegated to the appropriate executive members.
Vice President
- The Vice-President shall actively assist the President, shall preside at Executive Committee or Student Chapter meetings in the absence of the Chair, and shall automatically succeed to the Office of Chair upon completion of the Chair's term, or upon the death or resignation of the Chair.
Treasurer
- Responsible for the financial workings of the organization.
- Prepare annual budget, as well as any special request funding.
- Makes itemized costs available to any parties giving financial support.
- Requests funding from the Graduate Student Association, the School of Informatics and the Industrial contributors.
Secretary
- Plans and organize at least one social event per semester.
- Announces events to all members.
- Estimates costs of the events and ensures that the costs meet the budget requirements as determined by the treasurer.
- Conducts poll at least once per year to evaluate member interest regarding social activities.
Vocal 1
- The vocal 1 assists the President and the Treasurer.
Vocal 2
- The Vocal 2 assists the Vice President and the Secretary.
Academic Advisor
- Promotes the overall intellectual growth of the graduate student body.
- Organizes the annual graduate student symposium.
- Arranges at least one student-run academic event per semester, including, but not limited to, a guest seminar speaker.
- Estimates costs of the academic events and ensures that the costs meet the budget requirements as determined by the treasurer.
Article V – Organization
The officers of the club are elected for one year terms by popular vote of the members at an annual election meeting.
Article VI – Election Procedure
- Election for all positions will be held annually. Upcoming elections should be announced at least a week before the election takes place. Each position on the Executive Board shall be decided by a simple majority vote of the student members. If no simple majority is achieved, a runoff election will be held between the two candidates receiving the most votes. Any members unable to attend the election may present his or her vote writing to the residing President and the faculty advisor before the elections are held.
- Any student member of the Informatics Graduate Student Association may nominate him/herself or any other student member for any position on the Executive Board. Nominations may be submitted in to the President up to the time of the election.
- Any member who wishes to challenge the election procedures may present his or her case to the organization within one week of the posting of the election results. The challenger shall be given a chance to speak at a supplementary meeting following the elections. If a majority of members attending the meeting decide in favor of the challenger, another election will be held for all positions at the next scheduled meeting.
- In the event that an officer resigns his or her post or is removed from the office by impeachment as described in Article VII, the Executive board will appoint, by majority vote a temporary replacement for that office. A permanent replacement for that office shall be decided at the next regularly scheduled meeting by the election guidelines outlined in Article V
Article VII – Impeachment
The officers of the Executive Board may be removed from the office by impeachment. At least one-third of the student members or three officers of the Executive Board may petition to impeach an officer of the Executive Board. The grounds of impeachment include neglect of duties or abuse of power. Removal from the office shall be granted by two thirds vote of the student members at a regularly scheduled meeting.
Article VIII – Amendments
Amendments to this constitution may be suggested by any member of this organization. Any person wishing to propose an amendment should do so at the regularly scheduled meeting or by writing to the President. Amendments can be made with the two third votes of the members.
