    GMP III Instructor, Gifted Math Program

    Joseph Montante has been with the Gifted Math Program since January 1995.  He has taught both the Geometry and Algebra portions of GMP III.  He has dedicated his career to the education of the gifted both here at GMP and in his full-time job at Buffalo Public School No. 56, which has been the G/T magnet for City Schools since 1980.   

    Mr. Montante has been teaching for over 20 years and has been recognized several times for excellence in his profession.  He has been nominated 3 times to “Who’s Who Among American Teachers”.  In 1997 and again in 1999, he was given a “Youth Best Mentor Award” by Erie County.  In December 1998, he was featured in WNY Family Magazine as “Teacher of the Month” and in 2006, Mr. Montante was presented with an Edith Sliffe Award for the excellent performance of his GMP students on the American Mathematics Contest.

    Mr. Montante has traveled extensively throughout the world.  He has been on safari in Tanzania and climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, camped in the Australian Outback, trekked through the jungles of Borneo, and sailed through the idyllic islands of Greece.  In all, he has visited over 40 countries.  A couple of his trips were education related.  In 1996, he won a Fulbright Award and taught in Namibia (Southwest Africa) for a term.  In 2003, he was granted a Fulbright Memorial Fund Award and was sent to Japan for 3 weeks to experience the culture and learn about the Japanese system of education.

    Other hobbies of Mr. Montante include gardening, cooking, health and fitness.  He holds black belts in both judo and tae kwon do and is a former New York State champion in judo.  He is very interested in restoration and has done extensive work restoring his 1890’s Victorian home.  He resides in Buffalo along with his wife, Anne, and his dog, Augie.
