1. What is Linux?
Linux is a free Unix-type operating system originally created by Linus Torvalds with the assistance of developers around the world. Developed under the , the source code for Linux is freely available to everyone. Because of its robustness and availability, Linux has won popularity in the open source community and among commercial application developers. It is popular in web server and other high-performance computing environments, and has recently begun to gain popularity in workstation environments as well. IBM, Hewlett-Packard and other giants of the computing world have embraced Linux and support its ongoing development.


2. What is the SUNY Linux Learning Collaborative?
The State University of New York Linux Learning Collaborative is a partnership between the University at Buffalo and Just-in-Time Resources designed to enable information technology professionals and employers to inexpensively and conveniently prepare to take the Linux Professional Institute level 1 certification exams.


3. Who is Barry Woodbridge?
Barry Woodbridge, Ph.D. has been instructor and consultant specializing in information technology for over two decades. He has worked with Novell, Inc., WordPerfect Corporation, and SoftSolutions Technology Corporation. While with Novell Training Services, he worked on their first Linux course offering and then with Novell's Customer Communities and NUI Hot Labs in their Linux initiative to write and then teach Linux courses at BrainShare 2004. Dr. Woodbridge holds MCNI, MCNE, and LPI level 1 certification.


4. How do I register?
Click here to download the Registration Form (65K PDF file). At this time, we are only taking registration by phone, fax or mail. Payment can be made by check, money order or credit card.

5. When can I begin the training?
After completing the online registration, you will receive a confirmation e-mail within 24 hours. In this e-mail will be your training course access code. After you receive this access code, you will be ready to begin the training. Registrations processed after 5 p.m. on Friday will be processed on the following Monday.


6. What computer requirements do I need?
A browser and Flash Reader (free download).


7. Does the course cover both LPI exams?
Yes, the course prepares you to take 101 and 102 exams which are necessary for LPI level one certification.


8. Are there any other costs associated with this training?
Access to the online training is $295. That is the only mandatory fee. If you would like a complete manual with DVDs, that will be an additional $150 ($200 for non-US addresses), with shipping costs included. The fee for the LPIC-1 exam is not covered by any of the above purchases.


9. Do I have to buy the manual?
No. All necessary multi-media and printed instruction (printable PDF’s), inclusions and software are included in the online version. The online product must be purchased prior to ordering the binder manual which is considered to be a “back up” to LPIC-1 requirements as they exist at time of order. If you do buy the manual, appropriate taxes must be added.


10. When can I take the LPIC-1 exam?
We suggest that you take the exam shortly after the successful completion of this online training.


11. What if I don’t finish the training within six months?
If you don't finish the training within six months, please contact the Millard Fillmore College office at mfcadmin@buffalo.edu or 716/829-3131 to discuss extension options.


12. Can I share my account with a friend?
No. The program is designed to be your personal learning experience. Unauthorized sharing, copying or posting of training material is forbidden.


13. Several people in my department would like to purchase this training. Is there a group discount?
Discounts are available to groups of 100 or more registrants. There are no additional discounts for educational or nonprofit institutions.


14. Does this training promote a specific brand of Linux?
No. This training prepares the student to take the LPIC-1 exam, which is sponsored by the Linux Professional Institute. LPI is vendor-independent and therefore does not promote a specific brand of Linux.


15. Is the training interactive?
No. There is no interaction with the instructor or with others who are taking the course.


16. Can I see a sample lesson?

17. Are there tests at the end of each unit?
There are review questions available at the end of each chapter and a complete sample exam included that will verify your readiness to challenge the official exams.


18. Where do I take the LPIC-1 exam?

19. What if I don’t pass the LPIC-1 exam?
If you do not pass the LPIC-1 exam, you may retake it at a future date.
