Article 96

Civil liability derived from crime expires in accordance with time limitations prescribed by civil statutes.

Commencement of criminal proceedings toll the action for a civil suit. Limitation periods for instituting a civil action do not run between the commencement and termination of criminal proceedings.

The causes for lapsing of the criminal action and punishment do not extend to the civil obligations derived from a crime.
