Student Advisory Board

The Student Advisory Board is the heart of the Buffalo Human Rights Center; it provides the genesis of the programming and it determines the direction the Buffalo Human Rights Center should take based on student interest.

BertozziA 2L at the SUNY Buffalo Law School, Sarah Bertozzi graduated with a bachelor's degree in International Relations from the University at Buffalo, and has worked as an intern at the New York State Department of Human Rights, the International Institute of Buffalo, and the Volunteer Lawyers Project. Bertozzi is primarily interested in immigration, specifically Refugee and Asylum Law. This is her second year on the Buffalo Human Rights Center Advisory Board.


CarpenterKatelyn Carpenter is a second year law student with a concentration in international law studies. She has received a bachelor's degree in international relations from William Smith College where she focused on Middle Eastern studies. Of particular interest to Carpenter are human rights abuses occurring in the Middle East, particularly degradation of women's rights and governmental crimes against humanity.


Candace R. FilipskiCandace R. Filipski '13 is a second year law student and currently serves as Student Co-Director. Candace has served on the Student Advisory Board since her first year of law school. Her primary interests concern human rights issues related to the Middle East, access to healthcare and education, and labor law. Candace completed her undergraduate studies at the University at Buffalo where she majored in Sociology and minored in Philosophy of Law. Prior to law school, Candace worked in healthcare for nearly nine years. She serves on the editorial boards of both the Buffalo Human Rights Law Review and the Buffalo Public Interest Law Journal, and was recently awarded the 2012 Virginia Leary Human Rights Fellowship. She served as a judicial intern for the Honorable Judge Michael Telesca of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York in Rochester during her 1L summer and will spend her 2L summer as a law clerk with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in Buffalo.


Sabrina HoushSabrina Housh '13 graduated magna cum laude with her bachelor's degree in political science from Binghamton University. Her interest is in Middle Eastern human rights issues, with an emphasis on peace negotiations and mediation in the Palestinian Israeli conflict. This is Housh's second year on the Buffalo Human Rights Center Advisory Board.


Joshua KuttnerJoshua Kuttner is a second year law student, concentrating in international law. He obtained his undergraduate degree from SUNY Binghamton and completed his first year of law school in Albany. Apart from being on the BHRC, Kuttner is also a member of the Buffalo Human Rights Law Review. His interests of the different cultures of the world and the desire to help people on a global scale led him to the Buffalo Human Rights Center.


Josh MoldtJosh Moldt '13 graduated from Arcadia University with a bachelor's in International Studies: Globalization, Development and Human Rights. Moldt has been very interested in human rights for many years, with particular interest in: transitional justice, restorative justice, the law of war, rights of refugees, rights of the child, freedom from slavery, and access to justice.


Amber PrzybyszAmber Przybysz is a third year law student with a concentration in international law. She received a bachelor's degree in International Relations and Sociology from SUNY Geneseo, where she also minored in German. Her interests in human rights include peacekeeping, post-conflict reconstruction, and the rights of children, specifically stopping the use of child soldiers. Przybysz has interned at TransAfrica Forum in Washington, DC. This is her second year on the Buffalo Human Rights Center Student Advisory Board and first year as a Student Director.


Lauren SkompinskiLauren Skompinski is a first year law student at UB in addition to being a new addition to the BHRC Student Advisory Board. Lauren has her B.A. in International Studies, focusing on Africa and the Middle East from the University at Buffalo. In the summer of 2011, she completed her M.A. in Elections and Campaign Management at Fordham University in New York. Skompinski is also certified to monitor international elections by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. Lauren currently clerks for the Buffalo Human Rights Law Review, and is a Buffalo Human Rights Summer 2012 Fellow. Her areas of interest include Middle Eastern politics, Islam, democratization, immigration and migration issues, elections, national and international security, and international law.


Yousef TahaYousef Taha '13 graduated with his Bachelor's degree in History from St. John's University. His interests include the social and legal implications of the Palestinian diaspora, the education and advancement of indigenous people living in Western New York, and supporting the rights of LGBT communities in America. Taha has spent significant time in the Middle East including Egypt, the occupied Palestinian territories, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. In the summer of 2011, he interned for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) where, among other things, he advocated for the protection of the indigenous Bedouin Arabs living in the Negev Desert, and helped in lobbying members of Congress to maintain its funding for UNRWA. Through his legal education, he hopes to protect the civil liberties' of all Americans and enhance the understanding of Islam in America. This is Taha's first year on the Buffalo Human Rights Center Advisory Board.
