Gymnastics? What?
I'm sure you've watched the Olympics
at some point in your life. Gymnasts are those crazy athletes
that do all sorts of flips and twists and stuff on beams, bars and
rings. We're the ones that do flips at parties, can be frequently
found upside down somewhere, can do handstands for minutes at a time,
and quite generally are just plain awesome at what we do. For
those of you who love gymnastics, but don't understand it...read
on!
Guys and Girls can
do it!
Our team is co-ed, however the sport of gymnastics has
some differences for each gender: Girls compete 4 events -
vault, bars, beam, floor. Boys compete 6 events - floor, pommel horse, rings, vault,
parallel bars, high bar. Girls are allowed music for floor to express
artistry, while boys are not allowed to have music, and pack in
more tumbling and strength moves instead. The tricks that both genders do require
an immense amount of strength, flexibility, endurance, balance, and kinesthetic
awareness.
Competitions!
At competitions, each gymnast is given a set
amount of time to warm up. Afterwards, the gymnast presents
him/herself to the judge and executes a routine on the given apparatus,
according to certain guidelines and regulations. The judge then
scores the routine against a rubric. That score is compared to the
other athletes' routines, and winners are decided. At some meets,
there is also a team competition. Team scores are calculated by
adding the top 3-5 scores from each team on each event (depending on
competition). The total is the team score, and is compared to
other team scores to decide winners.
Women compete using Level 9 rules with D and E
bonus. Men compete using a modified FIG code. Either google
for the womens JO code or men's FIG code, or ask an officer. Those
gymnasts not quite at that level should not be discouraged.
Gymnasts from all levels compete, and do quite well! Since we are
a club division sport, we emphasize the fun side of competition, and
therefore nobody should feel intimidated or scared to compete.
