Housing in Buffalo
Deciding where to live is one of the most important decisions you will make! To help you decide, read Living On-Campus vs. Off-Campus.
Students Who Will Live On-Campus
Although University residence halls and apartments don’t officially open for new students until August 21, 2014, international students who will attend International Student Orientation and who have made arrangements to live on campus will be permitted to check in to their on-campus housing starting on Saturday, August 16 from 2:00-8:00 p.m. No check-ins will be permitted before August 16. Residence hall students will incur a $35 per night early arrival charge from August 16-21; the charge will be billed directly to your student account.
If you choose to stay in on-campus housing during International Student Orientation, please be aware that the residence halls and apartments will not be officially open and, therefore, there will be few students staying there and only a limited number of staff members to assist you.
You should also be aware that, once you check in to your on-campus housing, you are contractually obligated to rent it for the entire academic year. Housing contracts are typically broken only if the student leaves the University at Buffalo.
On-Campus Housing Room Assignments & Cancellation Deadline
The Housing Office plans to send housing information electronically to international students and will use the e-mail address you provided on your admissions application for that purpose. If you do not receive your housing information by the beginning of August, feel free to contact the Housing Office by telephone at (716) 645-2171, by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org or by fax at (716) 645-3968. The Housing Office is open on Mondays - Fridays from 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. EST.
The deadline to cancel on-campus room assignments and receive a $300 housing deposit refund is May 1, 2014. Students who submit cancellation requests after May 1st will forfeit their $300 housing deposits. Any cancellations received after July 1, 2014 will result in forfeiture of the $300 housing deposit plus a $150 late cancellation charge. After July 1, 2014, you may not be released from your housing contract unless you will not attend UB during the Fall 2014 semester. Therefore, you are strongly encouraged to contact the Housing Operations Office to confirm that you will be released from your UB housing contract before you sign a lease for an off-campus apartment.
Students Who Will Live Off-Campus
If you choose not to live on campus, we urge you to make temporary housing arrangements prior to your arrival in Buffalo. We do not recommend arriving on campus with lots of luggage and no place to spend the night as it is very difficult to find permanent housing in one day.
Should you need temporary accommodations prior to August 16 or during International Student Orientation, your temporary housing options include staying in a hotel or with a friend, relative or UB student.
