TOEFL and SPEAK Tests

TOEFL

If you are a graduate student with a TOEFL Deferral, you must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) upon arrival and you may not register for courses until you have taken this test. The Institutional (paper-based) TOEFL test will be given on Tuesday, January 21 in the early afternoon.  The expected charge for taking the TOEFL is $35; this charge will be billed directly to your student account.

SPEAK

You must take the Speaking Proficiency English Assessment Kit (SPEAK) before registering for classes if:

  • you have been awarded a teaching, research or graduate assistantship
  • your academic department requires it

Individually administered SPEAK tests are scheduled in the early afternoon on Tuesday, January 21. The expected charge for the SPEAK test is $75; this charge will be billed directly to your student account.

A Test of Spoken English (TSE) score not more than two years old may replace the SPEAK test, depending on the score. You must bring official TSE results for review.
