English Classes and Tutoring

English Language Institute (ELI)
UB’s English Language Institute (ELI) offers UBinternational undergraduate and graduate students both credit-bearing and non-credit courses, as well as opportunities to develop the language skills necessary to succeed in their academic programs.

ELI's Listening Lab
Fall, Spring and Summer semesters
The Listening Lab is available for both listening and pronunciation practice at no charge to UB international students. It is located in Clemens Hall 3.
ELI's Chat Room
Fall and Spring semesters
The Chat Room is a face-to-face conversation program offered to UB international students at no charge. Two international students meet with a UB undergraduate student for 50 minutes. Chat Room appointments are made weekly and are limited to one appointment per week starting at 2:30, 3:00, 3:30 or 4:00 p.m.

Three non-credit, non-standard courses are offered through the ELI's Evening Program.

ELI's Intensive English Program
Fall, Spring and Summer semesters
The Intensive English Program (IEP) is a non-credit, full-time program of English language training. Students are enrolled for 25 hours per week of instruction in reading, writing, grammar, speaking and listening. Students usually enroll in the IEP prior to beginning a full-time undergraduate or graduate program of study.
UB's Academic Writing Institute for Students in Graduate and Professional Studies Programs
UB's Academic Writing Institute offers students in graduate and professional degree programs opportunities to improve their language skills so they can succeed in their academic programs. These opportunities include non-credit courses and an editing service.
Writing for Multilingual Speakers
Students address challenges common to ESL speakers and learn how to apply rules of the English language to their writing: grammar, sentence structure, word usage, spelling, punctuation and mechanics.
Writing the Research Paper
Students examine the elements of effective writing while analyzing the published works of other researchers; exploring the research gap; asking a significant question; developing a thesis statement; writing an abstract, introduction, body, and conclusion; integrating research; using academic voice; writing clearly and succinctly; and documenting sources.
Writing the Academic Essay
Emphasis is on overcoming writer's block; applying the writing process of prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing; organizing an introduction, body and conclusion; constructing a thesis statement; developing main ideas and supporting details; structuring sentences; and applying appropriate use of punctuation, mechanics, and word choice.
Professional Editing Service (online)
Editing services are available for thesis, dissertations, personal statements, internship essays and other types of academic writing.

Accent Modification / Compton P-ESL Program
The University at Buffalo Speech-Language and Hearing Clinic offers a program which focuses on accent reduction for English as a Second Language (ESL) speakers.
Participation in the Compton program is a 13-week commitment. Each 13-week course starts at the beginning of the spring and fall semesters. Participants meet once a week in a small group setting. Days, times and location may vary each semester.
The Compton program includes the following:
- An initial analysis of speech production (incorporated in the 13 weeks or as scheduled)
- A customized learning program that addresses each client's needs
- 13 group sessions
- The Compton P-ESL workbook and training materials (CD)
Tuition / Cost:
Tuition is non-refundable, and refunds will not be issued for missed classes. Tuition is due, in full, one week prior to the scheduled start date of the program.
Acceptance into the program will be based on eligibility and available openings.
