Promoting Your Website
Promote your website! You've spent a great deal of time perfecting your website, but your time is wasted unless people visit your site. Make a list of the pages at UB that you think should link to your site, and send the page owners e-mail asking to be added.
Also, send e-mail to myub@buffalo.edu if you think a link should be added to MyUB or to ubinfo@buffalo.edu if you think a link should be added to www.buffalo.edu.Search Engines
You may want to submit your site to be indexed by a search engine. You can submit your website for indexing by the UB Search engine or the other search engines listed below for free. There are other search engines out there that will index your site for a fee.Increasing Rankings in Search Engines
There are ways of increasing your site's visibility in the search engines. If you want your site to show up more often and closer to the top in the search results, you should take these tips into consideration:
Use meaningful titles
Search engines often pay particular attention to the <title> of a
page. Briefly describe exactly who you are and include a few keywords if
possible. Try, however, to keep the title short (less than a sentence
length).
Bad: ABC Department
Good: SUNY Buffalo ABC Department - Student Resources
Use meta tags
Search engines look inside your for meta tags. These tags
contain information about your document. The two most popular meta tags are
the "keyword" and "description" tags; most search robots pay greater
attention to these elements than to the rest of the document. Fill these
with anything relevant!
Example: (replace content with words relevant to your site)
WARNING: The "better" search engines will REMOVE YOUR SITE if they
find misleading meta tags, such as those that contain inappropriate
keywords or keywords that are repeated too many times.
