Administer a website using Adobe Dreamweaver
This guide will explain how to configure Adobe Dreamweaver 10.0 (CS4) to create, edit, and manage a website on the UB WINGS webserver.
PLEASE NOTE that Dreamweaver must use a single UBIT name to log onto ubunix to upload files. It cannot take advantage of traditional UNIX groups. If you must have multiple people maintain a site, you must make a special request for an "administrative account". This administrative account will be a shared account that Dreamweaver can use to upload files. Each user that wants to use Dreamweaver to update the site should follow the following steps, using the shared administrative account. Do NOT share personal UBIT accounts to maintain a site on wings. For more information, see the IT Policy page.
This guide is for Adobe Dreamweaver 10.0 (CS4). If you are using a different version, the configuration process and site editing procedure may be different than what is discussed in this guide.
You will need the following information before getting started:
- Your UBIT Name and password OR administrative account username and passowrd
- The location of the page on WINGS
Start Dreamweaver. From the Site menu, choose New Site....

Enter a title for your site, the web address to the site and click on Next. For example,
http://wings.buffalo.edu/path/to/site

Choose, No, I do not want to use a server technology, and click Next.

Choose the location where you want files saved locally on your computer, and click Next.

Enter the details for connecting to the webserver. Use the following values for this form:
How do you connect to your remote server? FTP
What is the hostname or FTP address of your Web server? ubunix.buffalo.edu
What folder on the server do you want to store your files in? /net/wings/info/www/path/to/site
What is your FTP login? UBIT Name
What is your FTP password? UBIT password
Use Secure FTP (SFTP) CHECKED

Click on Test Connection to verify that the information you entered is correct. Click OK and then Next.

If multiple users will be editing the site with a special administrative account, choose to check out files when you edit them locally, enter appropriate contact information, and then click on Next. Note that each user editing the site should follow this guide and enter their name and contact information in the appropriate place.

Verify that all the information you entered is correct, and click Done to finish the set up process. If you want to change any of the settings in detail, click on the Advanced tab on the top of the dialog box.
Your website is now properly set up to be edited and managed through Dreamweaver.
