"Our Community is in Your Hands" is the theme of the 2003 State Employees Federated Appeal (SEFA) campaign. Our community is large and diverse - UB employees' SEFA contributions significantly help people in New York State, Western New York, and right here at the University at Buffalo, where it's estimated that one out of every four members of our UB family directly benefits from much needed SEFA-related assistance. We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in this crucially important campaign again this year. SEFA is fundamental to the community outreach initiatives that play such a key role in our mission as a public research university. For many years, our UB community has dedicated itself to working in partnership with our surrounding neighborhoods for the benefit of all. SEFA is a wonderful way of giving back to the communities that have given so much to us, and it is one very powerful and beneficial way of fulfilling that time-honored responsibility. We greatly appreciate the generous individuals who have donated their time, their skills, and their financial resources to the SEFA campaign in the past, and we hope that you will meet or exceed your past generous contributions this year. If you are new to UB or have never participated in UB's SEFA campaign, we urge you to look through the many SEFA-supported agencies in the brochure¾we are confident that you will find an organization that interests you and that would greatly benefit from your support. The economic difficulties that have hit New York State during these past few years continue, with little relief in sight. Accordingly, this year's UB SEFA fundraising goal is larger than ever, but with your help, we are sure to meet this challenge. The University at Buffalo has a longstanding and admirable tradition of exceeding our yearly goal, and our successful 2002 campaign was no exception. Last year, UB's contribution made up almost 36% of the total SUNY contribution. We are enormously proud of our UB family's outstanding ongoing participation in the annual SEFA drive, but there is more work to be done. The University at Buffalo is poised to meet the many challenges and difficulties that our state, our region, and our community face. With your help, we can overcome those challenges and can make a lasting and meaningful difference in the lives of many. Thank you for stepping up and taking "our community into your hands" to help ensure a promising and prosperous future for us all.
