Message from President William R. Greiner

President William R. Greiner The theme of this year's State Employees Federated Appeal (SEFA) campaign is "Giving Where We're Living." For employees at UB, giving where we're living may include supporting agencies and programs that are helping people in New York State, in the Buffalo-Niagara region, and even right here in the university community. In the challenging economic period since September 11, 2001, many not-for-profit agencies have suffered serious cutbacks in funding. Our community depends on these organizations, and they need our help as well--now more than ever.

Together with education and research, UB's tripartite mission includes public service. We at UB are dedicated to helping sustain our region by sharing our time, our talents, and our financial contributions for the benefit of others. One major way we pursue this goal is through our participation in the annual SEFA campaign. UB has a long and proud tradition of supporting SEFA, and together, we can uphold and strengthen that tradition this year.

If you have contributed to SEFA agencies in the past, please know that your support is greatly appreciated. We hope we can continue to count on your generosity, and we urge you to consider increasing your contributions this year. If you haven't yet joined this longstanding and proud UB tradition, please look though the SEFA brochure, which contains a listing of many worthy agencies that may benefit from your support.

SEFA is a wonderful way to affirm that we care about our community and are prepared to meet its needs. As we undertake the invigorating work of strengthening our region, we bring home the message that a university, like all communities, is comprised of people, and SEFA is here to help those people. On behalf of the entire University at Buffalo community, thank you for helping to enhance the quality of life by "giving where we're living"- at UB, in our surrounding communities, and beyond.

    Sincerely,
    William R. Greiner

    Dear UB Colleagues:

Mecca Cranley - Chairperson When my teen-ager stands in front of the refrigerator and says, 'There's nothing in this house to eat" he really means that there are no freshly baked cookies or other treats immediately at hand. But for many children in our area, there literally is no food in the house. Through your contribution to this year's SEFA campaign you will be helping vital community agencies feed these children and provide needed support for other children, families, elders and others with special needs.

The theme of the 2002 campaign is "Giving Where We're Living". We have set an ambitious goal of $750,000 because we know that many local non-profit community programs have suffered financially since the catastrophic events of last September. Many people in the Western New York area "where we're living" are counting on UB's proud tradition of generosity to help them. I am confident we can meet - perhaps even exceed - the goal we have set if each member of our UB community makes a contribution to the extent of her or his means.

Think of this: If everyone at UB increased their contribution by the price of one latte per payday (approximately $2), UB would raise over one million dollars this year! When your SEFA envelope arrives, please be as generous as you can. As always, you can determine exactly where your money goes by designating the agencies of your choice on the giving form. Remember, lots of people where you're living are counting on you.

    Sincerely,

    Mecca Cranley
    Chairperson
