A Decade of Progress: Tenth Anniversary Program Held at Central Library

If you missed the celebration of the Uncrowned Queens Institute’s 10th anniversary on February 22nd, 2008, you missed a wonderful program of music, a historical retrospective of the work of the Institute and readings by the contributors to “Go, Tell Michelle: African American Women Write to the New First Lady”. Co-sponsored by the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library, the program opened with greetings from Library Executive Director Bridget Quinn-Carey and Derrick M. Byrd, Jr., the Institute’s Board secretary. The program was held in the Library’s Ring of Knowledge where the library staff had mounted an exhibit that chronicles the Institute’s history. We are deeply appreciative to the staff for an excellent exhibit and tribute to the work of the Institute.

We were treated to an outstanding (as always) performance by the Daughters of Creative Sound. A special feature of the program included readings from the new book, “Go, Tell Michelle: African American Women Write to the New First Lady”. We especially want to thank several of the book’s contributors, who graciously gave of their time to attend and participate in this program: Karima Amin, Sharon Amos, PhD, Lillian Davis-Wilson, Sharon Holley, Debra Johnson, Arlette Miller-Smith, Shirley Sarmiento and Deborah Seals.

It was a wonderful program and thanks to all who participated and attended. You can watch the program on our television show, “Illuminations”, at 6pm on Wednesdays on Channel 20.
