Ethics Committee Core Curriculum

Introduction

Catherine Lyons

In 1992, Dr. Norman Chassin assembled the Chairs of Western New York hospitals' Ethics Committees for the purpose of establishing a network of individuals with an interest and involvement in Bioethical issues. Over the last 5 years, this group has accomplished much in the way of networking, collaboration and evolution into the Community Affairs Committee of the Center for Ethics and Humanities in Healthcare. In one of its earliest efforts, the network solicited funds from area hospital CEOs to support educational and developmental programs for Ethics committees members across the region.

This resource manual is the result of those efforts and a use for these funds that was thought to have the most far reaching benefit for contributing hospitals. It is the sum of the members' experiences, expertise and useful references used over the years. It is designed to assist members of any Ethics committee, whether those with lengthy experience or new appointments.

We are indebted to Norm Chassin for his vision in establishing this network and his continued encouragement to provide resources to our colleagues and remain involved in the ethical challenges of healthcare.
