- The New Paltz Situation
The UB Faculty Senate endorses the following statements:
The Faculty Senate at SUNY/Buffalo has received the Report entitled Review into Women’s Studies Conferences at SUNY/New Paltz, November 1, 1997.
The Faculty Senate commends the Report for its careful assessment of the evidence and well-considered and detailed analyses, culminating in
recommendations the Faculty Senate is pleased to endorse.
Specifically, the Faculty Senate underscores recommendation F, stating (with economy of speech), that when controversies arise about SUNY/campus
events, it is essential to learn as much as possible about the facts before drawing conclusions, and to reflect how public statements have the potential
to harm the institution.
The Faculty Senate would have preferred if the last recommendation, G, (here quote verbatim): “G. Finally, with reference to what we see as inevitable future controversies in this area, our Committee believes that presidents who act in the best
traditions of academic freedom and its responsible exercise should receive the staunch support of their faculty, students, System Administration,
College Council, and the Board of Trustees.”Had been concluded with a sentence affirmatively stating that President Bowen had, in the matter at hand, indeed acted in such best traditions.

- The SUNY Press
WHEREAS, university presses serve a unique and indispensable function in the pursuit of scholarly advancement and intellectual inquiry,
and are a hallmark of an important university, and
WHEREAS, SUNY Press has performed this function admirably since its founding in 1966, in that it is today, by size and reputation,
one of the nation’s leading university presses, and
WHEREAS, SUNY Press is one of the few university presses in the nation that now performs its mission without benefit of
significant financial subsidy from the state or the SUNY system, and
WHEREAS, any attempt to meddle with SUNY Press’ activities based on other than purely academic principles would only compromise its
academic freedom, integrity, and hard-won reputation for excellence, and
WHEREAS, the current SUNY Press search for a new executive director must strive to find the most qualified and capable candidate,
based on knowledge of and experience with university publishing, consistent with academic values,
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the SUNY Buffalo Faculty Senate supports an open search for Press Director, unencumbered by political
pressures, and that seeks to identify the most well-qualified candidate, based on knowledge of and experience in academic publishing and commitment
to academic values, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the Senate supports the continued governance of the Press by an Editorial Board composed of scholars
chosen from SUNY campuses, and opposes any effort to meddle with SUNY Press publishing operational activities, including those of the Editorial Board,
that would compromise the values of academic freedom, open intellectual inquiry, and continued financial viability, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT copies of this resolution be sent to the SUNY Chancellor, and University Faculty Senate Chair.
