If there were such an animal as a classic underground mag, BACKWOODS would probably fit the bill. It seems to bridge the gap between '60s radical publications and '80s/'90s marginal press. Full of stories, screeds, comics, ads for alternative businesses, poetry--beat, experimental, hip-pastoral--great earthy graphics and crude scribblings. Anyone thumbing through BACKWOODS and not finding at least a couple of things to enjoy could pretty much be written off as a hopeless asshole. A good dose for an anxious age.--Jake Berry
