What
are University Experience courses?
University Experience is designed to assist first year students with their
adjustment to the University, and help them develop a better understanding
of themselves, UB and each other. Students will have the opportunity to
register for one of two alternative courses: UB 101 University
Experience (1 credit hour) or CPM 101 Freshmen Experience
(2 credit hours). Both courses emphasize reading, writing, speaking, critical
thinking, library and study skills - all within the context of academic,
career and personal exploration. Students gain valuable tips on how to
study, take notes and manage their time more effectively. University Experience
courses also introduce students to the many campus resources available
at UB.
What are the benefits of enrolling
in University Experience courses?
Regardless how well students may have performed in high school, they will
find that college is very different. UB101 helps students succeed in college.
Each class is limited to 20 students - so everyone benefits from personal
attention in their first semester. Small classes also make it easier to
meet friends and study partners.
University Experience Teaching
Staff
EOP staff and undergraduate teaching assistants (commonly known as a T.A.)
team-teach University Experience courses. This team approach ensures that
each student receives a lot of personal attention and encourages interaction
among new and more experienced UB students. Undergraduate teaching assistants
are particularly helpful in assisting their peers from a student perspective.
Here's what other students have said about University Experience Courses:
"CPM 101 was helpful in introducing me to college life during
my first semester"
"My first semester was awesome because of UB 101"
"Enrolling in UB 101 is like having a small family in a big place"
How do I register for University
Experience courses?
Incoming freshmen enrolled in the Educational Opportunity Program are
registered by their EOP Counselor to take either UB 101 or CPM 101 during
their first semester at UB. Orientation advisors are also available during
UB's new student orientation to assist students with registering for these
courses.
