Installing the JDE for Emacs

These are the steps used to compile/install the JDE for Emacs under the RHEL 4 environment. Most of these steps are straight from the install guide from the JDEE website.

• Download the JDEE, cedet, and elib tarballs from the JDEE site.
• Extract the JDEE to /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/jde-2.3.5:

  [root@localhost mm238]# cd /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp
  [root@localhost site-lisp]# tar zxvf /home/mm238/rpmbuilds/SOURCES/jde-latest.tar.gz

• In the tarball, some of the file permissions weren't set quite correctly, so I went ahead and fixed that:

[root@localhost mm238]# cd /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/jde-2.3.5/lisp/
[root@localhost lisp]# chmod a+r *

• Unpack and compile cedet:

  [root@localhost mm238]# cd /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp
  [root@localhost site-lisp]# tar zxvf /home/mm238/rpmbuilds/SOURCES/cedet-1.0beta1c.tar.gz
  [root@localhost site-lisp]# mv cedet-1.0beta1c cedet
  [root@localhost site-lisp]# cd cedet
  [root@localhost site-lisp]# make

• Install elib:
  • Extract to any directory, install script will put compiled code in correct location based on Makefile.
  • Edit elib Makefile and change prefix from /usr/local to /usr

    	prefix = /usr
    	datadir = $(prefix)/share
    	...
    	

  • Compile/install elib: [root@localhost elib-1.0]# make install elib should now be installed to /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/elib
• Add lines to /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/defaults.el. When distributing via RPM, this step can be incorporated into the %post section scripts.

  I put the additions in a file named defaults.el.add,included it with the package, and merged it in using a UNIX re-direct. The JDEE also requires an environment variable that points it to the JRE. Add export JAVA_HOME=/usr/local/java/jdk1.5.0_3 to /etc/profile.d/java/sh
