| Professor Stanford brings a videotape
into the departmental office, where Ms. Berkley, the secretary, is working.
"Maybe you can help me," he says. "I have to be out of town tomorrow. I've
scheduled for my class to see this film. The vcr and tv will be in the
room. Will you have one of the student assistants there at 12:30 to start
it and then make sure they return it here after class?"
Ms. Berkley takes the tape. She recognizes
the title--it is a one-act opera that played on PBS the night before. Before
she can say anything, Professor Stanford says, "I taped it last night.
The students were assigned to watch it already. So tomorrow will be a kind
of reinforcement. I'm hoping they'll learn to appreciate it."
