Manually Running Windows Update

  1. Click start, then select Windows Update.
  2. A web browser window will open and attempt to connect to Microsoft's Windows Update homepage. There will be a brief pause while your computer's current configuration is detected and processed with the update server.
  3. A screen will appear detailing various install options. Select Custom Install.
  4. There will be another brief pause while the server searches for updated components. You may be asked at this time to install a service pack. If so, read the information on the service pack and determine whether you want to install it. Installing service packs is highly recommended, as they provide a number of enhancements and security fixes. If you wish to install the service pack, click Download and Install Now. The service pack will download and install, and you will then be required to restart your computer and run Windows Update again. If you do not wish to install the service pack at this time, click Review Other Updates.
