Web Folders

Platform: Windows

Introduction

WebDAV allows you to drag-and-drop files to or from your computer and a web server, such as UBFS space, by creating a Web Folder. Web Folders are the Microsoft Windows client implementation of WebDAV.

Web Folders cannot be mapped to a drive letter, but are supported by several applications. At the University at Buffalo, Web Folders are one of several means of accessing UBFS file space. Users must enter their UBITName and Password to authenticate.

Web Folders are a method of connecting to files when a more direct method such as mapping a drive is not available.

Windows Explorer Is Not Internet Explorer

WebDAV involves using Windows Explorer. This is part of the Windows operating system, and should not be confused with the web browser Internet Explorer. Entering the URL for Web Folders into Internet Explorer will not result in a window that utilizes Web Folders.

Windows XP: Creating a Web Folder to UBFS File Space

You can create a Web Folder at the UBFS root.

  9. You may need to re-enter your UBITName and Password.
  10. A Windows Explorer window will appear at the top-most level of file space in UBFS. You may then click on the links to reach your desired area.

    1stletter_ubitname/2ndletter_ubitname/ubitname
    or https://ubfs.buffalo.edu/ubfs/collab/ and click Next.
  6. Enter your UBITName and Password when prompted. Any prompts for a username and password throughout the setup process will require entry of your UBITName and Password as well.

  9. You may need to re-enter your UBITName and Password.

Accessing Your Web Folders

After you create the Web Folder, you can access it at any time. Double-click on the My Network Places icon on the Desktop. You should see an icon for the Web Folder to access UBFS with the name you gave it. Double-click on the icon, then enter your UBITName and Password when prompted.

If you prefer, you can create a shortcut to your Web Folder on your Desktop by right-clicking on the network place, selecting Copy, then right-clicking on the Desktop and selecting Paste. Please note that copying files out of certain UBFS directories may require entry of your UBITName and Password.

Adding and Removing Files

Note

It is recommended that you not include spaces in filenames, because they may convert to %20 characters instead.

You can drag folders or files from your computer or other storage media attached to your computer and drop them onto the Web Folder. You can also drag folders or files from the Web Folder onto your computer.

You can also save to your Web Folder from within applications, such as Microsoft Word. Choose File, then Save As in your application. Choose My Network Places, then the name of your Web Folder, and enter the name of your file (without spaces).

Changing File Permissions

File permissions cannot be modified through WebDAV. If you have access to a Windows computer on which you can map a drive, you can change file permissions.
