Connecting to Departmental NT Servers via the UBVPN Client
Documentation table of contents.
Introduction
The UBVPN client allows users not directly connected to the University at Buffalo's network to access files and servers they otherwise could not. While many students utilize the UBVPN client for connecting to UB's network from off campus, the software can also be used by faculty and staff from off campus to access departmental NT servers, in addition to web and file servers.
Windows XP Network Configuration
- Click start, then select Control Panel. Double-click System, then click the Computer Name tab.
- A unique name should be in the Full Computer Name field. The correct workgroup should be in the Workgroup field. If you do not know which workgroup to enter, contact your departmental computer contact or node administrator.
- To change either of the above values, click Change, and enter the appropriate values in the Computer Name and Workgroup fields. Click OK.
- Confirm that the connection over which you will be using UBVPN has Client for Microsoft Networks installed in the Network Properties.
UBVPN Configuration
You must first install the UBVPN Client. See the documents Mobile Computing for Windows XP or Off-Campus Computing for Windows XP for details. Use the directions below to configure the UBVPN Client for connecting to departmental NT servers.
- Click start, select All Programs, University at Buffalo VPN Client, then VPN Client.
- Select Options, then Windows
Logon Properties.
- Select Enable start before logon.
- Click OK.
The next time you log on to the machine you will be prompted with the UBVPN Dialer.
NT Domain Logon Scripts through the UBVPN Client will only be processed at logon time. If you log on to the local machine and then launch the VPN dialer, you will be authenticated to the domain on UB's network, but your Logon Script will not be processed.
