Scanning in Public Computing Service Areas
Documentation table of contents.
Introduction
Scanners are available for use in several Public Computing Service Areas. These areas include Capen 1st floor Cybrary south side and Lockwood 2nd floor Cybrary. The scanners are able to scan both text (OCR) and images. There is a 30-minute time limit for using the scanning stations.
Scanning an Image Using Photoshop
You can use Photoshop to scan images and line drawings.
- Click start, select All Programs, Photoshop, then Adobe Photoshop CS.
- Place your image on the scanner glass, with the side you want to scan facing down in the rear leftmost corner.
- Select File, Import, then HP Scanjet 3970 TWAIN.
- The scanner will automatically begin to pre-scan the image, then will display the result in the hp scanning window.

- If you wish to change the scanning resolution, click Advanced at the top of the hp scanning window, select Resolution, then select a new resolution from the pull-down menu on the right-hand side of the window.

- You can change the scanning margins by clicking one of the solid black boxes displayed on the image, then dragging the margins to your preferred settings.
- When you are satisfied with the resolution and margin settings, click Accept. Please wait while your image scans. The image will then be automatically opened in Photoshop, and you can begin editing it.
Note
The scanned image is not automatically saved. You must save the image from within Photoshop.
Saving an Image Using Photoshop
- If you want to make changes to the image, save the file to .psd format, which can only be opened by Photoshop, then make your changes.
- Once you have finished, you may save your image to other formats, such as .jpg which is best for photos, or .gif which is best for text/line art. Click File, then select Save for Web. Select the settings for quality and file type as desired, and then click Save.
Scanning Text Using OmniPage Pro
If you have a paper that you want to scan, you can use OmniPage Pro for Optical Character Recognition (OCR).
- Click start, select All Programs, ScanSoft OmniPage Pro 14.0, then OmniPage Pro 14.0.
- Determine whether your document is black and white (B&W), grayscale, or color. Click File, select Get Page, then Scan B&W, Scan Grayscale, or Scan Color, as appropriate.
- The ScanSoft Scanner Setup Wizard window may now appear. If it does, select No, then click Next. If this window does not appear, continue to Step 7.

- Select Test the current scanner or digital camera, then click Next.
- Select No (recommended), then click Next.

- Click Finish.

- Please wait while the scanner begins the scanning process.

- After the scanning process is complete, if you are done scanning all of your pages, click Stop Loading Pages. If you have additional pages to scan, click Add More Pages.

- Click Process, select Perform OCR, then Start.
- If OmniPage Pro does not recognize some words in the document, the OCR Proofreader window will appear. Choose the appropriate response to each unrecognized word.
Saving a Document using OmniPage Pro
Once scanning is complete and OCR has been performed, you may save the file to a number of different formats.
- Click File, select Export Results, then Save to File.
-
Enter your desired file name in the File Name text field. You can choose a document format from the Files of type pull-down menu. The default selection of RTF Word 2000 (*.rtf) is highly recommended, as it can be opened by many word processing programs. Click OK.
Note
The default save location is the Temporary File Space (U) drive. Anything you save to this drive will automatically be deleted when you log off the computer.
Exiting Photoshop or OmniPage Pro
To exit Photoshop or OmniPage Pro, select Exit from the File menu. Make sure you retrieve your originals from the scanner.
