Scheduling LiveUpdates
Note
Updating to a new version of Symantec AntiVirus may overwrite your previous settings for automatically running LiveUpdate.
By default, Symantec AntiVirus runs LiveUpdate automatically every Friday evening at 8 P.M. To run LiveUpdate, your computer must be turned on and you must first establish a connection to the Internet. If Friday evening is not a convenient time for you to have your computer on, you can schedule another time for LiveUpdate to run automatically and check for new virus definitions.
- Double-click on the Symantec AntiVirus shield icon in your system tray at the bottom of your screen.
- Select File, then Schedule Updates.
- Select Enable scheduled automatic updates. Click Schedule.
- Choose the frequency, day, and time you want LiveUpdate to run. Make certain you select a day and time when your computer is usually turned on and connected to the Internet. In case your computer is not turned on for the selected day, click Advanced.
- Select Retry the task within, then select a time period. Click OK.
- Click OK.
- Click OK.

- Click Exit.
Scanning for Viruses
To scan your computer or portable media devices (such as floppy disks, jump drives, or Zip disks) for viruses, follow these instructions.
- Double-click on the Symantec AntiVirus shield icon in your system tray at the bottom of your screen.
- The Symantec AntiVirus window will appear.
- Select Scan from the menu bar or from the menu list on the left-hand side of the Symantec AntiVirus window.
- Select Scan Computer.
Note
Many of these scan options are not available in the Public Computing Service Areas, which includes the Cybraries. You can only scan A: (floppy) or a jump drive attached through the USB port.
- You may choose to scan your entire computer (all hard and floppy drives), or you may choose to scan only selected drives. Click Scan to begin scanning the selected drives or devices.
- A Custom Scan window should appear, showing the progress of your scan.
- When the Symantec AntiVirus scan detects a virus, it will attempt to remove the virus from the infected file. If the file can be cleaned, the virus is completely removed from the file. If the virus cannot be cleaned, Symantec AntiVirus attempts a backup action, such as moving the infected file(s) to quarantine.
