Introduction

RealPlayer provides software that can find, play, and organize common audio and video files (such as .mp3 and .wav files), as well as stream audio and video files. For more information on the different versions of RealPlayer, browse the www.real.com web site. The University at Buffalo recommends the free version of RealPlayer. Should you decide to download and purchase the Premium Player, you will still have access to all of the features of basic RealPlayer.

Obtaining RealPlayer

  1. RealPlayer can be downloaded at: http://www.realnetworks.com/products/media_players.html
  2. Scroll down to Download the Free RealPlayer and click Download next to Windows 98/NT/2000/XP.
  3. When the Opening window appears, select Save to Disk, then click Save File .

  4. When the download is complete, click Open next to the file's name in the Downloads window to begin the installation process. If the Downloads window does not appear automatically, press Ctrl j to view it.

Installing RealPlayer

  1. Please wait while RealPlayer prepares to install.

  2. Read the End User License Agreement, then click Accept.

  3. Select the checkboxes that determine where to install RealPlayer shortcuts, then click Next.

  4. RealPlayer will begin to copy the necessary files for installation.

  5. To designate RealPlayer as the default player for certain types of media, select Select media types for RealPlayer from a list. A list of media types will appear, and you may select which file types are to be associated with RealPlayer. To make RealPlayer the default media player for all media types, select Make RealPlayer your Universal Media Player. Click Finish to confirm your choice.

  6. RealPlayer will launch.

    Note

    You must establish a connection to the Internet in order to complete the setup.

  7. Your computer will contact RealNetworks.

  8. Select Basic Setup, then click Continue.

  9. Enter your E-mail Address, desired Password, Country, Language and Zip Code in the respective fields. It is optional to select your Gender and Birth Year. Deselect any options you do not want to use, then click Create to continue.

    Note

    Product registration is optional. If you do not want to register with Real Networks, click Cancel.

  10. Once RealPlayer is configured, the program and a sample audio/video clip will launch.
