Installing PuTTY

Introduction
PuTTY is a secure UNIX shell that anyone at the University at Buffalo can use to interact with UNIX or Linux servers. In addition, PuTTY can be used to connect to private UNIX or Linux servers that allow remote communication.
Obtaining PuTTY
- If you are obtaining PuTTY from the UB Tech Tools 2006 CD, continue to step 3. Otherwise, visit the University at Buffalo's Tech Tools Software Downloads page at http://wings.buffalo.edu/computing/software/.

- Click Utilities under the Windows heading, then click PuTTY.

- If you are obtaining PuTTY from the UB Tech Tools Software Downloads page, beside Get PuTTY there will be server links labeled One through Four. Click any of these links to continue. If you are installing PuTTY from the UB Tech Tools 2006 CD, you will not need to select a download server or enter your login information. Click Get PuTTY, then continue to Step 5.

You will be prompted to enter your login information. Enter your UBITName and Password, then click OK.
- Select Save to Disk, then click OK.

- Press Ctrl j to open the Firefox Downloads window, then click Open next to the download entry for PuTTY to begin the installation process.

Installing PuTTY
- When the Welcome window appears, click Run.

- Ensure that Run the PuTTY 0.58 installer is selected, then click Run.

- When the Welcome window appears, click Next.

- Select the location where you want to install PuTTY, then click Next. The default location is recommended.

- Select the Start Menu folder where you want the PuTTY shortcuts to be installed, then click Next. The default folder is recommended.

- Select any additional options you want to use, then click Next. The default options are recommended.

- Ensure that the installation options displayed are correct, then click Install.

- Please wait while PuTTY is installed on your computer.

- When the installation is complete, select whether you want to view the README.txt document for PuTTY, then click Finish.
