ResNet: NETGEAR Router
Documentation table of contents.
Introduction
Note
In ResNet, each user should purchase and connect to his or her own router. When multiple users utilize the same router, it is difficult to identify the user responsible for actions such as propagation of viruses.
A firewall is a security system that acts as a protective boundary between your network and the outside world. Attaching a router to a computer allows the computer secure Internet access with an inherent firewall. The University at Buffalo recommends purchasing either the NETGEAR RP614v2 Cable/DSL Router or the Linksys BEFSR41 EtherFast Cable/DSL Router. SNAP computer recipients will receive the Linksys BEFSR11 EtherFast Cable/DSL Router. This document provides instructions for the NETGEAR model. UB recommends that all students on and off campus use a router as a firewall.
The Router
Installing the Router
-
Insert one end of the Ethernet cable into the Internet port
(as labeled above in the section entitled The Router). If you are on
campus, insert the other end into the Ethernet wall jack. For DSL and
cable modems, insert it directly into the DSL or cable modem.
Note
Your computer does not have to be turned off to install the NETGEAR router.
- Connect the computer to one of the four numbered Ethernet ports on the router using another Ethernet cable.
- Connect the power adapter to the router. Next, plug the adapter into a surge protector.
Configuring the Router
