Power Management for Windows

Platform: Windows

Introduction

Energy Star is a government-backed program that helps businesses and individuals protect the environment through superior energy efficiency. The Energy Star standard is incorporated into every copy of the Windows operating system, but must be manually enabled to be at its most effective. Enabling power management features is a quick way to conserve energy by allowing your monitor to turn off after it has been inactive for a specified period of time.

Enabling Power Management

  1. Click start, then select Control Panel.

    Select Control Panel
  2. Note

If you are using the Classic Start menu setting, you will need to click Start, select Settings, then Control Panel.

  3. Double-click on the Display icon.

    Select Display
  4. Note

The images for this step use Control Panel's Classic view. If you are using Category view, once the Control Panel window appears, click Appearances and Themes, then select Display.

  5. Click the Screen Saver tab, then Power in the Monitor power section of the screen.

    Select Screensaver
  6. Ensure that the Power schemes pull-down menu is set to Home/Office Desk. Set the Turn off monitor pull-down menu to After 15 mins, then click OK.

    Adjust Power Scheme

After you have changed these settings, your monitor will turn off after fifteen minutes of inactivity, and will turn back on when you move your mouse or press a key on your keyboard.
