ResNet for Windows Vista

Introduction

ResNet is the physical cabling and support services that make it possible for students living on campus to use their own personal computers to access computing, library, and academic services directly from their rooms. Each student in a University Residence Hall or Campus Apartment has a dedicated Ethernet hook-up that links his or her personal computer to the Internet.

You must follow all conditions of use while using ResNet, including:

Configuring ResNet

To use ResNet, you need the following:

• A 10/100 Ethernet card suitable for your computer
• A category 5 Ethernet cable

If your Ethernet adapter is not installed and you do not feel comfortable installing it, or if you encounter problems during installation, contact UBMicro, UB Commons Suite 109, at (716) 645-3554.

1. In the Windows Vista Start Menu, select Control Panel.
   
2. Double click the Network and Sharing Center button.
   
3. In the Tasks menu on the left, select Manage network connections.
   
   
4. Right-click on the Local Area Connection icon, then select Properties.
   
5. In the Local Area Connection Properties window that appears, click once on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) to select it (making sure that you do not uncheck it), then click Properties.
   
6. In the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties window that appears, select the options for Obtain an IP address Automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically. Click Advanced.
   
7. Deselect the box for Register this connection's addresses in DNS.
   
8. Continue clicking OK to accept all changes until you return to the Network Connections window.

Your computer is now properly configured to connect to ResNet. Each time you want to connect to the Internet to use software such as Firefox, Internet Explorer, PuTTY, FileZilla, or Mulberry, you must follow the directions in the next section.

Establishing Your ResNet Connection

1. Open a web browser.

Note

After four hours of inactivity you will be disconnected from ResNet. Every time you reconnect to ResNet you will need to follow these steps.

2. When your browser first tries to connect to ResNet, it will be redirected to UB NetPass. UB NetPass is a system maintained by the University at Buffalo which scans computers attempting to connect to ResNet for viruses or other harmful software programs.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions to proceed through UB NetPass. The CIT documentation for UB NetPass is located at http://wings.buffalo.edu/
   computing /Documentation/gen/UBNetPass.html.
   Refer to the UB NetPass documentation to complete the ResNet logon process and begin browsing the Internet.

You do not need to sign off from the firewall once you are finished accessing the Internet.
