Introduction
Symantec Client Security is a software suite containing a software firewall and Symantec AntiVirus. Symantec Client Security enhances online security by restricting network traffic to your computer. Customizing which programs are allowed to remotely access your computer helps prevent harmful attacks by hackers or viruses. Symantec Client Firewall has the added advantage of working seamlessly with Symantec AntiVirus, meaning that LiveUpdates and other upgrades to Symantec Client Security keep all of your computer's security features up to date with one easy download. Although you cannot install just one part of the Symantec Client Security suite, a standalone version of Symantec AntiVirus is available for download. There is no standalone version of the firewall component.
While installing Symantec Client Security drastically improves your computer's security and integrity, it is important to note that it is not a 100% guaranteed solution that prevents all harmful attacks. Always exercise caution when opening email attachments, downloading programs, and connecting to remote servers.

Note
While the initial Symantec Client Security configuration occurs, your computer will NOT be protected by either the Windows XP or Symantec Client firewall. It is strongly recommended that your computer be behind a router or disconnected from the Internet while this process occurs.
Post-Installation Notes
- After Symantec Client Firewall has configured itself, it is highly recommended that you run LiveUpdate again to ensure that you have all of the latest security updates.
- If you live in the University at Buffalo Residence Halls or Campus Apartments, and UB NetPass attempts to scan your computer for the first time following your Symantec Client Security installation, you may receive an error message from Symantec Client Security. This message indicates that a mid-level intrusion has been detected. Click OK to allow UB NetPass access to your computer, but in the future, do not disregard warnings from Symantec Client Security. Additionally, never allow access to a program or user you do not fully trust.
- Read the section of Symantec Client Security 3 Use titled The Symantec Client Firewall Control Panel. If you are using the University at Buffalo default firewall settings, it is very important that your Control Panel matches the screen capture shown. If it does not, your configuration settings did not import correctly and you must manually install the XML file from the UB Tech Tools Software Downloads page.
- Regularly check for patches and updates to Symantec Client Security software.
