Symantec AntiVirus 10.1 for Windows XP
Documentation table of contents.
Introduction
Symantec AntiVirus is a program designed to prevent malicious software, known as viruses, from infecting your computer. It protects your computer from all viruses known to Symantec AntiVirus, and quarantines infected files before they can affect your machine.
There are numerous ways your computer can become infected with viruses, including using floppy disks or other portable media that contain infected files; downloading infected files from local networks; and downloading infected files from email, the Internet, or peer-to-peer file-sharing software.
Note
You must establish an Internet connection before downloading and installing Symantec AntiVirus.
Viruses may take control of your computer, causing it to behave erratically; hide in macros that infect and spread throughout Microsoft Word or Excel documents; and cause serious damage to your files by damaging data, deleting files, or erasing your hard drive.
Viruses cannot infect or physically damage your computer's hardware (e.g., your computer's keyboard or monitor), but they can cause your system to behave erratically.
You should not install Symantec AntiVirus if you have already installed Symantec Client Security from the Tech Tools CD or Software Download Site.
Determining Versions of Symantec AntiVirus
To determine which version of the software you currently have on your computer, double-click on the Symantec AntiVirus shield icon in your system tray, which is located at the bottom of your screen. The version number is shown in the Program Versions section of the Symantec AntiVirus window.
