Introduction
If you live off campus, you have a choice of how you will access the University at Buffalo's computer systems and the Internet. You can pay for a third-party Internet Service Provider (ISP), such as Time Warner Road Runner or Verizon, and connect to UB through a secure tunnel (UBVPN), or you can use a modem and dial in to UB's modem pool.
Note
The UBVPN Client does not work with AOL. To access UB services from AOL, see the section Connecting to UB from AOL.
There are nearly 1,000 UB modems that students can use to dial directly into UB. There are separate modem dial-up numbers for Erie County (UB is located in Erie County), most of Niagara County, and for select areas in Niagara County, including Middleport, Gasport, Newfane, Barker, and parts of Lockport. When you use the number appropriate to your area, the cost for each connection is usually equivalent to the cost of a local phone call. Check with your local telephone service provider to ensure that you select the correct number for your area, and to learn its cost. Rates can vary depending on your location, service provider, and telephone plan.
Firewall Issues
If you are running a firewall or a router for a home network, you must allow the following types of traffic to pass through: UDP port 500 (ISAKMP), IP protocol 50 (ESP), and UDP port 4500 (for use with NAT and NAT-T).
Installing UBVPN
The UB Virtual Private Network (UBVPN) Client allows you to securely connect to Wireless Internet Zones on campus. It also allows you to securely access UB resources while off campus when connected from third-party Internet Service Providers (ISPs) such as Adelphia and Verizon. It cannot be used from within ResNet, wired offices on campus, wired OpenPort connections, or dial-up to UB (UB PPP).
If you have previously installed the UBVPN Client, you must install it and restart your machine before re-installing the UBVPN Client.
You may see an unsigned driver warning message during some steps on Windows XP if you have not applied any of the Service Packs. Click through the message or avoid it by running Windows Update and applying all critical updates and Service Packs.
- Visit the UB Tech Tools Software Downloads page at http://wings.buffalo.edu/computing/software/.

- Click Install First! under the Windows heading, then click UBVPN Client.

- If you are installing UBVPN Client from the UB Tech Tools Software Downloads page, beside Get UBVPN there will be server links labeled One through Four. Click any of these links to continue. If you are installing UBVPN Client from the UB Tech Tools 2005 CD, you will not need to select a download server or enter your login information. Click Get UBVPN, then continue to Step 5.

- Enter your UBITName and Password, then click Log In.

- Select Save to Disk, then click OK.
- Double-click on the UB_VPNclient4.6_dist Zip file that appears on your Desktop.
- Double-click on the Setup file.

- The InstallShield Wizard will run. Please wait.

- When you begin the installation you may receive notification that the
IPSec Policy Agent and Internet Connection Sharing must be disabled. Click
Yes if you want the installer to disable
it. Otherwise, you can disable it manually in Windows XP. Click start, select Control Panel, Performance
and Maintenance, Administrative
Tools, then double-click on the Services icon. Disable the service
named Internet Connection Firewall (ICF)/Internet
Connection Sharing (ICS) by right-clicking on it, selecting Properties,
then setting the Startup Type to Disabled.

I want to restart my computer now. Close all applications and save
your work, then click Finish to complete the
installation and restart your machine.

Using UBVPN to Connect from third-Party ISPs
To use the UBVPN Client from off campus, you must first connect to the Internet using an off-campus ISP. If UB is your ISP, you cannot use the UBVPN Client when dialing in; see the section Setting Up Your Dial-Up Modem Connection instead. If your ISP is AOL, you cannot use the UBVPN Client when dialing in; see the section Connecting to UB from AOL instead.
You can also use the UBVPN Client to connect to a Wireless Access Point on campus if you have a wireless network card installed in your machine. See the document Mobile Computing for Windows XP for directions.
- Click start, select All Programs, University at Buffalo VPN Client, then VPN Client.
- Select offcampus
from the Connection Entry choices.
- Click Connect.
- Enter your UBITName and Password, then click OK.
- A UB banner will appear. Click Continue to connect.
Note
Power management modes differ from laptop to laptop. If you are using a laptop connected to a wireless network, when your computer goes into sleep mode, the wireless network card will drop your Internet connection. Stop and restart the UBVPN Client to reconnect to UBVPN.

UBVPN Session Timeout
The UBVPN session will time out after 30 minutes of off-campus inactivity or 24 hours of use. If UBVPN times out and your IPSec connection is terminated, click OK, then launch the UBVPN Client again.
Disconnecting from UBVPN
When you finish accessing UB's network and want to disconnect from
UBVPN, right-click on the UBVPN icon (which resembles a padlock) in the System
Tray of the Taskbar at the bottom of the screen, then select Disconnect.
Uninstalling the UBVPN Client
To uninstall the UBVPN Client, click start, select All Programs, University at Buffalo VPN Client, then Uninstall VPN.
Connecting to UB from AOL
To access UB from your AOL account, you must first connect to the Internet using AOL, and then register your IP address using your web browser by going to telnet://remote.buffalo.edu. If you only need access for a week, enter your UBITName in the Username field, then press Enter twice. If you need access for more than one week, enter your UBITName in the Username field, press Enter, enter the letter c, then press Enter. Then, insert the first two parts of the IP address displayed at the start of your session and press Enter. Enter the number of weeks for which you want access (up to 12 weeks), and press Enter.
