General Information
If you live off campus, you have a choice of how you will access UB and the Internet. You can pay for a third-party Internet Service Provider (ISP), such as Time Warner Road Runner or Verizon, and connect to UB through a secure tunnel, or you can use a modem and dial up to UB's modem pool.
Note
The UBVPN client does not work with AOL. To access UB services from AOL, see the section Connecting from AOL.
UB provides a VPN client to allow for a secure tunnel to UB from third-party Internet Service Providers (ISPs) such as Adelphia or Verizon.
There are nearly 1,000 UB modems that students can use to dial in to UB directly. There are separate modem dial-up numbers for Erie County (UB is located in Erie County), most of Niagara County, and a separate number for Middleport, Gasport, Newfane, Barker, and parts of Lockport. When the correct number is used for your area, the cost is a local phone call. Be sure to check with your local telephone service provider to ensure you select the correct number for your area, and that the cost is a local phone call.
The UB Virtual Private Network (UBVPN) Client is available for installation, allowing you to securely connect to the University's computer systems from an off-campus Internet Service Provider (ISP). You can access shared files of a server or campus resources as if you were directly connected.
With a wireless network card installed in your laptop, you can be assured of a secure connection to the network in UB's wireless access zones. Setup instructions are available in the UB Wireless Network Access document.
Using UBVPN to Connect from Third-Party ISPs
The UBVPN Client is available on the Tech Tools CD, or you can download it from http://wings.buffalo.edu/computing/software/. Click on the link for Windows downloads, and select UBVPN from the list of available downloads.
Firewall Issues
If you are running a firewall or a router for a home network, you must allow the following types of traffic to pass through: UDP port 500 (ISAKMP), IP protocol 50 (ESP), and UDP port 4500 (for use with NAT-T, for users utilizing NAT).

UBVPN Session Timeout
Note
Power management modes differ from OS to OS, and from laptop to laptop. When your computer goes into sleep mode, the Network Interface Card (NIC) loses power and will drop your Internet connection with no warning message. Stop and restart the UBVPN Client to reconnect.
The UBVPN session will time out after 30 minutes of off-campus inactivity or 24 hours of use. If the UBVPN times out and your IPSec connection is terminated, click OK and launch the UBVPN Dialer again.
Disconnecting From UBVPN
When you are finished accessing UB's network and want to disconnect from
the UBVPN, right-click the UBVPN icon (which resembles a padlock) in the System
Tray of the Taskbar at the bottom of the screen. Select Disconnect.
Uninstalling the UBVPN Client
To uninstall the UBVPN Client, select Start, Programs, University at Buffalo VPN Client, then Uninstall VPN.
Connecting to UB from AOL
To access UB from your AOL account, you must first connect to the Internet using AOL, and then register your IP address using your web browser by going to telnet://remote.buffalo.edu. If you need access for more than one week, enter your UBITName into the Username field, and press Enter. Type c and press Enter.
