Burning CDs in Public Computing Service Areas Using Nero

Platform: Windows

Introduction

Nero allows you to quickly and easily burn a CD in various formats. For less-complicated burning tasks, a simpler version of Nero, called Nero Express, is also available. You must have a blank CD-R or a CD-RW in order to use the software; however, Audio CDs burned using a CD-RW may not correctly play on many CD players, and CD-Rs may only be burned once. Nero is available on Windows computers in Public Computing Areas.

Running Nero

  1. If you are copying an existing CD, insert the CD you want to copy into the disc recording drive in the computer. Otherwise, insert a blank CD-R or CD-RW into the disc recording drive in the computer. Recordable DVDs are not supported.
  2. Click Start, then select All Programs, Nero 7 Ultra Edition, Data, then Nero Burning ROM.

  3. Continue to the appropriate section for the type of disc you want to burn: a data CD, an audio CD, a copy of an existing CD, a disc image file, a video CD, or erasing a CD-RW.

Burning a Data CD

Burning a data CD allows you to record up to 650MB or 700MB (depending on the type of recordable disc you are using) of data to a CD-R or CD-RW. This disc can then be used only on computers. Song files burned to a data CD will not work in CD players, which require an audio CD.

  1. When the New Compilation window appears, select CD-ROM (ISO) from the left sidebar.
    New Compilation window
  2. Select the Label tab, then enter a title for the disc in the Disc name text field. This title is what will appear in My Computer when you insert the disc into a CD-ROM drive.
    Label tab
  3. Select the Burn tab, then select any options you want to use when burning the disc. Ensure that Write and JustLink are selected, then click New.
    Burn tab
  4. Navigate to the folder where the file(s) you want to burn to disc are located, then click on each file and drag-and-drop it into the second column. Continue this process until all the files you want to burn have been selected.
    Drag-and-drop window
  5. Click Burn at the top of the window.
    Burn button
  6. Verify that you have selected the burning options you want to use, then click Burn.
    Burn tab
  7. Please wait while the disc burns. A meter tracks the progress of the burning.

  8. When the burning process is complete, a dialog box will appear. Click OK.

Burning an Audio CD

Burning an audio CD allows you to play the recorded songs on a computer, CD player, or any device that accepts standard music CDs. Nero supports a wide variety of audio formats, including MP3 and WMA (Windows Media) formats. Audio CDs burned using a CD-RW may not play correctly on some CD players.

  1. When the New Compilation window appears, select Audio-CD from the left sidebar. If you want to add title and artist information to the CD, select Write on CD, then enter the title and artist into the respective text fields. This information will appear on computers and CD players that support CD Text. Click New.

  2. Navigate to the folder where your file(s) are located, then click and drag-and-drop them into the left column. Continue this process until you have added all the files you want to burn.

It is illegal to copy music without the permission of the copyright holder. Ensure that you have explicit permission to copy an audio file before burning it.

  4. Click Burn at the top of the window.

  5. Select the options you want to use when burning the CD. Ensure that you select Write, Finalize disc, and JustLink. If you want to use the recorded audio CD on a wide variety of CD players, select a write speed of no greater than 8x. Click Burn.

Copying an Existing CD

Nero allows you to copy a pre-recorded CD onto a CD-R or CD-RW. This new CD will be an exact copy of the original CD.

  1. When the New Compilation window appears, select CD Copy from the left sidebar. Select the appropriate type of disc you want to copy from the Fast copy settings drop-down box. If you are not sure of which setting to use, select Data CD.

  2. Note

It is illegal to copy a CD without permission from the copyright holder. Do not copy software CDs, or any other CD, without explicit permission from the copyright holder.

  3. Select the Burn tab, then select the options you want to use when burning the disc. Ensure that you select Write and JustLink. Selecting Disc-at-once from the Write method drop-down box is highly recommended for maximum compatibility with other computers. Click Copy.
    Burn tab
  4. Please wait while a temporary copy of the CD is created on the computer. A meter tracks the progress of this step.
    Progress meter
  5. The CD will eject from the drive after the temporary copy has been created. A dialog box will appear, prompting you to insert a blank CD-R or CD-RW. Remove the original disc, insert a blank disk, and wait for Nero to detect the new CD.

Nero supports a wide range of disc image file formats, including the popular ISO and IMG formats. Burning an image file creates an exact copy of the original CD used to create the image file.

  1. When the New Compilation window appears, click Cancel.

  2. Note

Burning a disc image file is not the same as burning a disc containing images or pictures. To burn a disc containing images, follow the data CD instructions.

  3. Click Recorder from the menu bar, then select Burn Image.

Burning a Video CD

Nero has the ability to burn a video CD (VCD), which can then be played on a computer or DVD player that supports VCD or SVCD playback. A wide variety of video formats can be used to record a VCD.

  1. When the New Compilation window appears, select Video CD from the left sidebar. To use the video CD on a PAL television (a type of television used in Europe), select PAL in the Encoding resolution section. Otherwise, select NTSC.

Erasing a CD-RW

CD-RW discs can be used many times, and can be erased to delete the files contained on them. Erasing a CD-RW makes it difficult to recover any important files on the disc, and should be considered permanent.

  1. When the New Compilation window appears, click Cancel.
    New Compilation window
  2. Note

Once you have erased a CD-RW, the data cannot be undeleted. Carefully ensure that you do not need the files on the CD-RW before erasing it.

  3. Click Recorder on the menu bar, then select Erase Rewritable Disc.
Recorder and Erase Rewritable Disc menu entries
  4. Select the erase method and speed you want to use. Selecting Quick-erase rewritable disc is quicker, but does not actually erase the data on the disc. Instead, it writes instructions on the disc telling computers not to display your files. If you have private information on the CD-RW, do not select the quick-erase option. Click Erase.
    Erase Rewritable Disc window
  5. Note

Even when using the quick-erase setting, your data cannot be undeleted without sophisticated software, so you should ensure that you no longer need the files on the CD-RW before erasing it.

  6. The erasing process begins, while a meter tracks the progress of the erasing. When the process is complete, the dialog box will disappear.
