Mulberry 3.1.6 for Windows

Platform: Windows

Introduction

Electronic mail, or email, is a convenient way to exchange information with friends, family, or professors, anywhere in the world. You must first establish an Internet connection before using email. On-campus students must authenticate through UB NetPass, while off-campus students must connect via telephone modem, Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), or a third-party Internet Service Provider (ISP) and the UBVPN Client.

Mulberry is a graphical email application that uses the popular Internet Mail Access Protocol (IMAP) for reading mail stored on the University at Buffalo's mail server. This allows you to read your email from Public Computing Service Areas, departmental labs, your personal computer -- even your friend's computer. Mulberry supports a variety of protocols: the Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) protocol for sending and receiving attachments with messages; the Internet Message Support Protocol (IMSP) for storing mail preferences and address books on a remote server; and the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) for looking up addresses in global address lists.

Configuring Mulberry for Use at UB

Most of Mulberry's preferences have been pre-configured for you. To add to or change your preferences you must have logged in and out of Mulberry with your account at least once. This creates a preferences data file associated with your user account. You must provide the following information if you are a first-time user.

  1. To open Mulberry, double-click on the Mulberry icon on your Desktop, or click start, select All Programs, Mulberry, then Mulberry.
  2. Log into Mulberry using your UBITName and Password. You must have an active Internet connection and be connected to the University at Buffalo's network via ResNet, OpenPort, dial-up or through UBVPN to connect. Mulberry does not work with Secure SMTP, so individuals using third-party ISPs, such as Verizon or Time Warner, must first connect using the UBVPN client in order to send email with Mulberry using UB's servers.

  3. If you have any previously saved preferences files, they will be displayed following your login. Select the preference file you want to use, then click Open.
    Remote Preferences.
  4. Mulberry can be used in two different views. The default view is the 3-pane Window. The other view is Separate Windows. To switch your view, select Layout from the Window menu and choose your preferred view.
  1. Select Preferences from the File menu. Make sure the Simple option is selected on the right of the window. Enter your name into the Real Name field. This is the name that will be attached to the messages that you send out (e.g., John Doe). Click OK to save your preferences.

  2. Note

UB blocks SMTP port 25. Attempting to use SMTP addresses other than smtp.buffalo.edu may not work.

  1. If in the Separate Windows view, select IMAP from the Window menu. In the IMAP window, make sure that the diamond next to INBOX is checked and that an orange triangle is present.

The orange triangle changes to a green square when the INBOX folder is open. These options make sure you receive alerts. They also refresh the screen when you receive new messages.
