FileZilla 2.2.30 Use

Platform: Windows

Using FileZilla

To start FileZilla, double-click on the FileZilla icon on your Desktop, or click start, select All Programs, FileZilla, then FileZilla.
Start FileZilla

Configuring a Secure FTP (SFTP) Server

Some FTP servers (including UBUnix) support Secure FTP (SFTP), which encrypts all communications between your computer and the remote server for maximum security. If the server to which you are trying to connect does not support SFTP, FileZilla will display a fatal error. If you see this error, continue to the connecting to a non-SFTP server section.

  1. Click File, then select Site Manager.
  2. Click New Site.
  3. Enter a name in the left-hand pane for the new site, such as UBUnix. Enter ubunix.buffalo.edu in the Host field. Select SFTP using SSH2 from the Servertype drop-down menu. Select Normal. Enter your UBITName in the User field, then click Save and Exit. This will pre-define the settings needed to connect to UBUnix via Secure FTP. You can repeat these steps substituting your department or machine as the name and the name of a departmental Secure FTP server for the Host field information.

Connecting to a Secure (SFTP) Server

Once you have defined a Secure FTP server, you can easily connect to it.

  1. Click File, then select Site Manager.
  2. Select the site you want to connect to from the My FTP Sites folder, then click Connect.
  3. Enter your UBIT Password when prompted to do so.

Connecting to a non-SFTP Server

If the remote server to which you are connecting does not support SFTP, you must connect using standard FTP.

When FileZilla opens, enter the remote address to which you want to connect, as well as your UBITName and Password at the top of the window. Press Enter to connect.

Performing Tasks in Filezilla

Once you connect to the remote server you can use the file browser window in the middle left of the window to browse your local files. Additionally, you can enter a specific path in the Local Site or Remote Site fields to manually move to a particular location. Drag and drop files from one side of the screen to the other to transfer them.
