Introduction
Note
X-Win32 can be used to run an X application such as xemacs or FrameMaker, or to start a terminal emulation window.
X-Win32 is an X terminal application for Windows-based machines. X-Win32 allows you to connect to Linux or UNIX servers on a local network or via the Internet. This application allows you to import Linux and UNIX applications to your Windows desktop.
Requirements
You must have an active computer account on a system running UNIX in order to use X-Win32. To learn your UBITName on UBUnix, bring your UB Card to any CIT Public Computing Area and swipe it through a UB Card swipe station.
Installing X-Win32
- Select your language preference and click OK.

- Click Next to begin the installation.

- Read the License Agreement. Click Yes.

- The License Key will automatically appear in the
Key field. Click Next.

- X-Win32 will launch, but will only appear in the bottom right of the
screen, in the Taskbar. The icon will look like an X.

- If you want to connect to UBUnix or change your X-Win32 properties,
right-click the X-Win32 icon and select Sessions,
followed by ubunix, or left-click and
select ubunix.

- Enter your UBITName and password into the User
ID and Password fields, respectively.
Click OK.

- You are now connected to UBUnix through X-Win32 using xterm, a terminal
emulator for the X Window System.

Running X Applications
After you have connected to the server, the xterm window will appear on your screen. You are now in a UNIX shell and ready to run any X application.
To run an X application, type its name followed by an ampersand (&).
For example, to run xemacs you would type:
xemacs &
Using the & character runs the application in the background, and permits continued use of the xterm window.
Connecting to Other Hosts
Accessing a host other than UBUnix requires you to have an additional account, such as with a UB department. Only certain departments have these accounts, such as the department of Computer Science and Engineering and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
- Right-click on the X-Win32 icon and
select X-Config. The following window
should appear:

- Under the Sessions tab, click on the
Wizard button to create a new session.
Select rexec as the Connection
Method, and click Next.
- When the Unix Host dialog box opens,
type in the host name to which you wish to connect , e.g.: unix.eng.buffalo.edu.
Click Next.

- A window asking for your login and password will appear. If you are
using X-Win32 at a public computing site or Cybrary, do not enter your
login information. Click Next.

- Select SunOS (Solaris)
from the Command list and click
Next.

- Choose a name for your session, e.g.
engineering. You may check the Launch
this session now box to connect right away.

- Click Finish.
Exiting X-Win32
You should close all X applications and log out from any UNIX sessions before exiting X-Win32.
If you are in an xterm session, type exit at the prompt to log off from your session.
Right-click on the X-Win32 icon and select
Close. If you have any xterm windows open,
the following dialog box will appear:
Click OK to close all sessions and quit X-Win32.
